V. Bazhenov

V. Bazhenov was born on March 12, 1737, to the family of a clergyman at one of the Moscow Kremlin churches. What a fine place to start an architectural career! At an early age, Vasily loved to draw pictures of different buildings in the city. In 1758, Bazhenov moved to St. Petersburg and started to study there in the Imperial Academy of the Arts. His knowledge of architecture was so extensive that he got the position of an assistant architect in the construction of St.Nicholas’ Naval Cathedral. In 1759, the Academy sent its most promising student to complete his studies in Paris. Under Professor Duval he made scale models of architectural elements and buildings. He made a complete model of the Louvre. Travelling in Italy he studied the work of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius “De architecture,” which had had such an important impact on the Renaissance and subsequent architecture in Europe.

Bazhenov's first designs were the facade of the Academy of the Arts buildings on the Neva River and the Arsenal building. In Moscow, he designed and built one fine office after another. He was responsible for the construction of the Kremlin embankment.

The architect’s most outstanding masterpiece was the palace known as the Pashkov House, named after the first owner. This splendid monument stands on a hill across from the Stroganov House. It is the most beautiful secular building in Moscow. In the 19th century, it housed the Rumyantsev Museum which had, among other things, Russian’s best library (later the Lenin Library).

V. Bazhenov was the architect of many famous architectural monuments: the mansion belonging to Princess Trubetskaya, the building of the Sklifosovsky Institute, and the Yushkov House (which had a great influence on Russian architecture).

V. Bazhenov designed and built naval buildings. He created palaces and churches for Catherine the Great. When Paul I ascended the throne, his career took an abrupt turn for the better. The emperor appointed him Vice President of the Imperial Academy of the Arts and entrusted ham with the task of designing St. Michael Castle for Paul I (subsequently known as the Engineering Castle) in St. Petersburg.

Vasily Bazhenov and Matvei Kazakov were the founders of Russian classicist architecture. Bazhenov’s buildings are gorgeous and remarkable for their simplicity and beauty.
