Step 3. Say where those places of interest are situated and how you can get there.
Activity 3. “My house is my castle” (a proverb).
Step 1. You’ve met your friend Alex who told you that he got acquainted with Jean Goden, a Frenchman, who came to Kharkiv from Rouen to write a report. Listen to Alex talking about Jean, compare it with the statements below given by your cousin a day before about the foreigner and correct some of them. Then report the story back to the teacher trying to recollect as many details as possible.
The Frenchman came to Kharkiv by train.
The man could easily understand the girl at the information desk.
The girl helped Jean to find the bus stop.
The city seemed to be extremely large and terrifying.
The necessary destination was written in Jean’s notebook.
The man characterized the citizens of Kharkiv as rude people.
Jean wrote a story about the city.
Jean’s ancestor had lived in Kharkiv.
The following words and expressions will help you understand the text better:
destination – місце призначення
a first-class sleeper – спальний вагон першого класу
stubbornness – упертість, наполегливість

What/the main problems/solve/in Kharkiv?
Activity 4. “A lot of problems in the world would disappear if we talked to each other instead of about each other”.
Step 1. In small groups, each describe one of these pictures, and then discuss together what messages the pictures give. The following words and expressions will help you:

a cash point (cashpoint machine, cash machine, ATM – automated teller machine) – банкомат;

it is possible to avoid traffic jams at rush hour;
the authorities can help to reduce the queues at cashpoint machines;
people have a cleaner city while throwing litter into rubbish bins;
it is possible to replace all the old trams with the new ones constructed in Ukraine.

Step 3. The citizens of Kharkiv are unhappy and dissatisfied because they feel that the council has made some bad decisions. Read the prompts and make statements using shouldn’t have + PII and could have + PII.
e.g. They shouldn’t have built a factory. They could have opened another hospital instead.

Step 4. You are a representative of the town council who has talked to the citizens of Kharkiv and is soon to talk to the mayor. First, write a report using your notes from Step 3 with shouldn’t + PII and could + PII.
Step 5. Your partner is now the mayor and you’re that representative. Present your report to the mayor, talk to each other about the problems mentioned above and work out solutions to them.
Activity 5. “Never give up!”
Walking along Sums’ka Street in Kharkiv you’ve met a foreigner who lost his way. As you have time you’ve decided to help him/her find a good place to have lunch and show some landmarks in the centre. Using the map and the prompts (Student A – below, Student B – see App. 1), give him the necessary information and answer his questions:
Student 1 (the foreigner). Where/a good café, Gorky Park, Shevchenko Garden, etc? How/I/get/to Svobody Square, Pushkins’ka Street, etc? What landmarks/I/find in the centre? Where/I/taste/national meals and drinks? What national dishes/I/order in a café, a pub, a restaurant? |
Activity 6.“Walking is a virtue, tourism is a deadly sin” (Bruce Chatwin).
Step 1. Your friends decided to visit Kharkiv next week. And you are in charge to find some information about this city. Trying to do it quicker, you decided to ask questions about the landmarks of Kharkiv on the Internet. Using the prompts below, make up the questions:
What/you/tell/me about the symbol of Kharkiv, known as the Mirror Stream (rotunda)?
What/popular sights/in Kharkiv?
What/monasteries (churches, cathedrals)/be/in Kharkiv?
What/you/hear/about the State Industry building?
What/monuments/worth/mention/in Kharkiv?
Where/the monument to Taras Shevchenko/situate?
Where/you/find/the House with a Spire?
Step 2. You live in Kharkiv. You found somebody’s questions about the landmarks of your native city on the Internet and decided to help. You also found the pictures of the seven wonders of Kharkiv. Then, to your surprise, you came across seven statements about them on the Internet. Now find the picture to each statement and give more detailed information about each of them to help the students from another city see the main landmarks:
The monument to one of the greatest poets of Ukraine is situated in the centre of Kharkiv.
You can see the House with a Spire in Constitution Square.
People listen to organ music in the Assumption/Dormition Cathedral.
The Sate Industry building is in the biggest square of Europe.

task 1. Your
sister got a task at school. She was given two photos and has to
answer who these two people in the photos are and how they are
connected with Kharkiv. Do your best to help her.
Home task 2. A friend of yours, who is a foreigner, is coming to see you at the weekend.
Get ready to meet him and show him round the city. Think about the following:
what sights you’ll wish to show him (including various natural sights and scenes of natural beauty, for example, the mineral water spring in Sarzhyn Yar, etc);
what Ukrainian souvenirs you can present to him, their meaning/purpose and the places where you can buy them;
what places to eat out at you can recommend to him.
Report everything to the class. Use pictures to illustrate your choice.
Home task 3. Make a presentation about outstanding Kharkovites who made (or are still making) a major contribution to the city’s development (Dmytro Ivanovych Bahaliy, Mykola Pavlovych Barabashov, Olexiy Mykolayovych Beketov, Hryhoriy Savych Skovoroda, Les’ Kurbas, Yuriy Volodymyrovych Shevelyov, etc).
