The Imperative Mood

I. Put the verb in the negative form of the imperative mood:

Model: Take this map!

Don’t take this map!

1. Look at him. 2. Take off your coat. 3. Smoke in this room. 4. Close your books. 5. Open the window. 6. Go to the library now. 7. Read her letter. 8. Leave the room, please. 9. Let us watch this film. 10. Let him do it.

II. Put the verb in the imperative mood according to the model:

Model: Tell him to close the door. > Close the door, please.

Tell him not to close the door. > Please don’t close the door.

  1. Tell him to tell you the time (to send a letter, to come to classes on time, to be at home at this time, to say it again, to read the text again).

  2. Tell him not to come here tomorrow (to leave now, to be late, to take those books, to go to the park now, to do this job).

III. Change the sentences according to the model:

Model: Shall we see this film? > Let us see this film.

Shall we go to the cinema after classes? (go to the snack-bar, have a break, take a bus, put the car there, see the doctor now, take a short rest, wait a little, give them a telephone call)

  1. Make up imperative sentences:

Ask your friend:

        1. to find lesson 11;

        2. to speak louder;

        3. to go to the library;

        4. to go to the blackboard;

        5. to repeat the sentence twice;

        6. to listen to the new text;

        7. to write exercise 3 at home;

        8. to look at the blackboard;

        9. to show you the way to the theatre;

        10. to put down the new words.

  1. Make up negative imperative sentences:

Tell your friend:

        1. not to leave the room;

        2. not to close the window;

        3. not to read the text;

        4. not to make such a noise;

        5. not to take the chalk;

        6. not to smoke in the room;

        7. not to open the door;

        8. not to write this exercise;

        9. not to talk so loudly;

        10. not to be late next time.

  1. Open the brackets:

1. Let’s (to go) home.

2. (not to be) so lazy! Please, (to do) this work now!

3. It’s cold outside. Let’s (to put on) our coats.

4. Let them (to do) this themselves.

5. (to pass) me the salt, please!

6. Let me (to ask) you a question.

7. Dear guests, let’s (to have) supper now.

VII. Translate into English:

  1. Откройте, пожалуйста, ваши книги.

  2. Будьте готовы.

  3. Приходите сюда в 7 часов.

  4. Будьте дома в это время.

  5. Не берите мои книги.

  6. Не опаздывайте на занятия.

  7. Не читайте эту книгу. Она очень скучная.

  8. Давайте навестим вашего друга сегодня.

  9. Давайте читать и переводить.

  10. Пусть студенты подождут немного.

  11. Накройте этот стол для обеда.

  12. Говорите по-английски, пожалуйста.

  13. Не открывайте это окно, пожалуйста.

  14. Дайте мне меню, пожалуйста.

  15. Пусть они помогут нам.
