The Plural of the Nouns

I. Give the plural of the following nouns:

Toe, city, chief, Negro, belief, shelf, film, tie, foot, goose, boot, plan, ox, fox, German, pencil, woman, mouth, mouse, child, deer, sheep, cheese, ship, crisis, phenomenon, datum, lady, nucleus, formula, letter, tooth, knife, car, room-mate, man-of-war, face, boy-messenger, fellow-worker, passer-by, sister-in-law.

II. Put the nouns in brackets in the correct number:

a) more than one (day); twenty one (day); one and a half (mile); one (mile) and a half; three (foot); five (foot) six; a (pair) of shoes; two (pair) of shoes; to walk in (pair).

b) 1. The man took five (fish) out of the bag and gave each dog (fish).

2. I wondered at the variety of (fish) in the aquarium.

3. Our (family) are all good chess-players.

4. Our (family) are next door neighbours.

5. The (people) of all the five continents were represented at the Moscow World Youth Festival.

6. The Russian (people) are very hospitable.

7. You must eat more (fruit).

8. Eve has a good (friend) at school.

9. There are (match) in the box.

10. The (map) is on the shelf.

III. Choose the right form of the noun:

  1. His hair/hairs is fair.

  2. He’s going to buy some new troser/trosers.

  3. They gave us some advice/advices.

  4. He’s got much information/informations about our travel.

  5. They are not going to buy new furniture/furnitures.

  6. I’m going to buy new sunglass/sunglasses.

IV. Choose the right form of the verb:

  1. Where does/do your family live?

  2. The trousers you bought for me doesn’t/don’t fit me.

  3. The police want/wants to catch two criminals.

  4. Physics was/were my favourite subject at school.

  5. May I take your scissors? Mine isn’t/aren’t sharp enough.

  6. The news wasn’t/weren’t as bad as we expected.

  7. Gymnastics is/are my favourite sport.

  8. Five days isn’t/aren’t long enough for a good holiday.

  9. I can’t find my glasses. Maybe you know where it is/they are?

  10. The people in that city is/are very friendly.

V. Put the nouns in these sentences in the plural form. Make the appropriate changes where it is necessary:

    1. This man works at our office.

    2. Put this knife on that table.

    3. The student put his book on the desk.

    4. What is your name?

    5. I’ll give you my book. This story is very interesting.

    6. A man, a woman, a boy and a girl are in the room.

    7. A new house is in our street.

    8. Is that girl your sister?

VI. Translate the expressions into English:

Прекрасные фильмы, мои книги, новые автомашины, зелёные парки, старые газеты, чёрные карандаши, стальные ножи, маленькие дети, мужчины и женщины, преподаватели и студенты, пять кроватей, девять страниц, семь человек, десять столов, шесть дней, два текста, много книг, мало газет, много воды, мало хлеба.

VII. Fill in the blanks with much/many/ a lot of:

  1. Mrs. Pray has … pupils in her group.

  2. There are … boys in our group.

  3. There is … chalk at the blackboard.

  4. There are … colleges within English universities.

  6. I have … newspapers in my bag.

VIII. Use little/a little/few/a few in the blanks:

  7. Are my shirts washed yet?

  8. There is many problem in this exercise.
