Introductory there

There + be combinations are used when we are talking or asking about the existence of people, things, etc.

We use there: when it is a “natural choice”: Is there a shop nearby? – There’s one over there; to announce or report events, arrangements, facts, etc.: There’ll be a wedding at the local church; for scene-setting in story-telling: There hasn’t been any rain for months.

“There is” compared with “it is”.

Once existence has been established with there, we must use personal pronouns + be (or other verbs) to give more details: There is a bus coming, but it is full. There is a man at the door. It is the postman; he wants to speak to you. There are some children at the door. They want to see John.

There is, etc. + determiner.

There is, etc. can combine with: a and an: There is a lamp on the table. There is an apple in the vase; a zero article: There are wasps in the jam; some, any and no: There are some pictures on the wall. Are there any books in your bag? There are no pictures on the wall; some, any and no compounds: Is there anyone who knows Mike’s address? There is nobody in the street. There is something black on the snow; numbers and quantity words: There are eleven students in this group. There are many old buildings in this street.

There … a lot of noise there. 22. There … nobody in the kitchen. 23. There … a few pieces of cake on the plate. 24. There … a woman and a man in the garden.
