Possessive adjectives and possessive absolute pronouns
Possessive adjectives and possessive absolute pronouns show possession, i.e. that smb or smth belongs to somebody. They answer the question Whose?
The possessive adjectives my, your, etc. are determiners and must always be used in front of a noun. The possessive absolute pronouns mine, yours, etc. are never used in front of nouns and are stressed in speech: This is my house. This house is mine. Possessive absolute pronouns can come at the beginning of a sentence: This is my hat. Yours is on the shelf. They are typically used in phrases like a friend if his, the house of hers, that brother of yours.
