5. Прочитайте та перекладіть текст. New Zealand’s Economy

New Zealand is a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of Australia. The total territory of New Zealand is nearly 300,000 square kilometers. Its climate is temperate with sharp regional contrasts.

The population of New Zealand is about 4 mln. About 80% of the population lives in cities.

English and Maori are both official state languages of the country.

For many years farming provided the country’s lifeblood. Wool and sheep meat earned most of the country’s income. Over a quarter of the workforce were in the farming industry.

In 1984 the government embarked on a dramatic and controversial economic reform programme, transforming New Zealand from an agrarian economy to a more industrialized, free market economy that can compete globally.

Today a capitalist economy combines the traditional earners such as wool and dairy products with new developments, from making movies to growing distinctive wines, or taking tourists white-water rafting. Tourism plays a considerable role in New Zealand's economy. The main industries are mining, food processing, wood and paper products, textiles, machinery, transportation equipment.

New Zealand is heavily dependent on trade. Its main exports are agriculture-based – dairy products such as milk powder and cheese, fruits like apples or kiwifruit and timber or wood pulp. Fishing also is expanding. Agriculture still brings in about half the money from overseas markets.

The country’s main trading partners are Australia, the USA, Japan, China and the United Kingdom.
