Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It lies in the southern hemisphere. The country's official name is the Commonwealth of Australia. It is a federation of six states. The capital of the country is Canberra.

Australia is one of the world’s richest countries but much of its wealth still comes from agriculture and mining. Australia is the world’s Number 1 in the production of diamonds, bauxite and lead. It also produces a big quantity of coal, iron ore and nickel. The country also has much of the world’s uranium under its surface.

About 60% of Australia is farmland, most of which is used to raise cattle and sheep. Australia is the world’s largest wool producer.

Other products that are produced include sugar cane and bananas in the tropical north and fruits like apples, oranges and pears in the south. Farmers make only 5% of the population, but they produce almost everything that the country needs.

Now Australia is making efforts to increase its competitiveness by focusing on the development of manufacturing and service industries. More and more Australians are employed in industries that include shipbuilding, textiles, aircrafts and chemicals. Today, agriculture accounts for about 4% of production; mining contributes about 8% and manufacturing about 16%.

Tourism is another source of income. Australia offers many attractions like Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef or Sydney Opera House.

Australia exports valuable minerals and farm products to all parts of the world. Income from the export enables Australians to have a high standard of living. China, Japan and other Asian countries buy Australian farm products like wheat and wool. Raw materials and minerals are also exported to European countries and to the USA.
