BERING VITUS

(690-1 740)

1 . Danish seafarer in Russian service; explorer. Born at Horsens, Jutland, in his

youth Bering made several voyages, including one to India on a Dutch ship.

2. On his return in 1 703, recommended to Peter the Great as a man “who has

been in India, and knows his way around”, he was invited to join the Russian

fleet as sub-lieutenant.

3. Little is known of his subsequent voyages or commands, except that he t5ook

part in military action against the Turks in 1 7 , was almost certainly in action

against the Swedes.

4. In 1 723 he was retired at his own request, because he had not been given the

rank of captain 1 st rank.

5. But in December 1 724 by order of Peter I he was recalled and appointed to lead

expedition to be organized by order of the Emperor.
