History and culture of lviv region

The Lviv region covers an area of about 22 thousand square km and its population is about 3 million. The administrative centre of Lviv region is the town of Lviv. It is said that every town, like every person, has its own character and appearance, its own life and destiny. Lviv, one of the oldest towns in Ukraine, has a stormy history. It was founded in the thirteenth century by Prince Danylo Halytsky. Over the centuries our town survived numerous wars, sieges, calamities. It was named by Danylo Halytsky after his son Lev. In 1272 Lviv became the capital of the Halician - Volynian principality. Thanks to its geographical position the town was soon included into the European system. Later king Kazimir attempted to seize the lands but the local population defended their town. At the end of the 14-th century all the territory belonging to Halician - Volynian principality fell prey to the Polish, the Lithuanians and the Hungarians. In 1356 the town of Lviv took on the Magdeburg Law.

In the 17-th century the peasants' undertaken movement grew into the war of liberation of the Ukrainian people. Bohdan Khmelnytsky headed this movement. His troops defeated the Polish King's army, one of the strongest in Europe, and liberated most of Ukraine. The beginning of the 18-th century was a difficult time for the people of Lviv. Twice they engaged in battle with the Crimean tatar invaders who were trying to storm the town.

The culture of Lviv was influenced by the European culture and traditions rooted in times of Kyivan Rus.

Lviv is a well-known center of musical culture. The Lviv Organ Hall, the Lyudkevych Concert Hall of the Lviv Philharmonic Society, the Cathedral of Dominicans and the Saint-Lazar Church regularly organize concerts and musical parties. The academic choir "Trembita". a choir of boys and men "Dudaryk", symphony orchestras of the Lviv Philharmonic Society and musical schools, brass bands, the orchestra of the Prycarpathian military district, dancing ensembles, amateur groups form a musical potential of the region.

During a year various festivals and competitions animate the cultural life of Lviv. In spring musicians from all parts of the world participate in the festival

"Virtuosos". The Lviv Day is celebrated in autumn. The theatre festival "Golden Lion", the musical festival "Contrasts" and the S.Krushelnytska festival of the opera art have become traditional.

1. Lviv is important trade, scientific, cultural and industrial center of Ukraine.

2. Since Lviv is situated on the western border of Ukraine, it has very favorable conditions to cooperate with international business partners and contribute into international business.

3. There are many enterprises organized in cooperation with foreign business partners, for example NTON, Svitoch and Nestle, sewing and timber factories.

4. Lviv is becoming an important tourist center, it’s cultural and historical heritage draws tourists not only from other parts of Ukraine but also from abroad. It has great potential for cooperation with foreign partners in tourist sphere.
