unfortunately lived a short life but had become a legend of
the native art. People still remember Yaremchuk,
born fifty years ago and revere his memory. The Ukrainian
musical fame and hits, which outlived their creator,
inseparably linked with his name.

was decorated with Ruby Order of UEFA “For Merits” because
of his significant achievements and invaluable contribution to
the football development

Sportsman,
wrestler
In
1905-1909 plain Ukrainian countryman Ivan Piddubny was
six-times world wrestling champion and remained invincible
wrestler of the world for the following 25 years. Anscestors
of Ivan Piddubny had been Cossacks and participated in
campaigns against Tatars, Turks and Poles.

Star
of the Ukrainian and world football. His sport career started
in the football team “Dynamo” (Kyiv) under the direction
of Valeriy Lobanovsky. Andriy Shevchenko is a Champion of
Ukraine (1995-1999), the best player in the 1998-1999
Champions League, holder of the UEFA
Champions
League Cup
(2003). Today he plays for the National Team of Ukraine and
the Italian football club “Milan”.

Andrey
Sheptytsky

For
44 years Andrey Sheptytsky headed the Greek-Catholic Church
and the Ukrainian Community in the period of two World Wars,
went through 7 regimes: Austrian, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish,
Soviet, Nazi and Soviet again.
At
the age of 36 Andrey Sheptytsky gifted with special sacred
charisma had become Chief of the Greek-Catholic Church. He
worked diligently to reconcile different ethnic groups and had
left a rich heritage of works on social problems and
spirituality. He established monasteries and church
institutions in Ukraine. He was the founder of clinic,
National Museum, Bohoslovska Academy supported religious,
cultural and educational institutions. In the period of Nazi
occupation he concealed hundreds of Jews in wards. In this
time he had written a pastor’s letter “Do not strike dead”
which considered being a bold protest against Nazi brutality.

Metropolitan
Chief
Archbishop, Cardinal and Metropolitan (1944-1984). He was a
productive writer some of his works consist of 20 volumes. In
1939 Metropolitan Andrey (Sheptytsky) ordained Joseph and he
was granted the title Bishop. After the death of Metropolitan
Andrey Joseph headed the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.
On
April 11 1945 the Soviet authorities arrested Archbishop
Joseph. He had spent 18 years in Stalin’s prisons, labor
camps and in Siberia where being a strong willed he remained a
true fearless God’s beliver. In 1963 he was released due to
the intervention of Pope Ivan XXIII and the American President
Kennedy for the participation in the Vatican Council II.
During
the next 20 years Patriarchy Joseph tried to make more active
the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in the West. He
established the Ukrainian Catholic University and built St.
Sophia Church in Rome. Died in 1984.

Kyiv and Halychyna Petro (Mohyla) is a prominent figure in the
sphere of church and education of Ukraine, Archimandrite of
the Kyivan Caves Lavra (since 1627), Metropolitan of Kyiv and
Halychyna (since 1632), founder of the Kyivan Academy (1632)
named after his name Kyiv-Mohyla Academy; one of the greatest
church magnate. Headed anti-union and anti-Cathoilic movement
in Ukraine in the period of critical struggle for the
strengthening of the Orthodox Church rights. Moldavian by
origin, a son of Symeon, owner of Voloshchyna (1601-16021) and
Moldova (1606-1607).

work of Shevchenko
is a unique phenomenon in the history of Ukrainian literature,
spiritual culture in general and in the literary language as
well. Having developed in his poesy important social ideas –
of equality and fraternity of sovereign nations, formation of
humane society developing the best human beings’ qualities,
attracting attention of Ukrainian people to the present and
past of their homeland, Shevchenko
skillfully had reflected them in his works of art. He
presented in the literary language the richness of national
language as much as possible, introduced abstract lexicology
in the language literary practise
– neologisms, church Slavonic words, international words.
Due to the creative work of Taras
Shevchenko
the Ukrainian language was represented to the world as one of
the most developed literary languages.
Shevchenko
is one of the most prominent masters of the Ukrainian fine
arts. He worked in the spheres of easel painting, graphic
arts, monumental art painting, sculpture, painted in
water-colours,
oil, etching, crayon.
He is the author of about thousands of creative works.
