An Eco-friendly School

Students at Westborough School in south-east England have been involved in environmental projects for more then ten years. In the past, they planted trees and made a school garden. A few years ago, they were worried about all the rubbish that people were producing in their area. So, in 2000, they decided to collect old newspapers, packets and cartons, to make a new school building! The school sent the collected rubbish to a special recycling company. The company made it into very strong sheets of cardboard. Then they cut the recycled cardboard to make the walls for Westborough’s after-school club building. A team from a TV programme came to the school when the club was finished. They tested the building with fire and water to make sure it was safe. Then they made sure it was really strong – the world’s strongest man hit it with a big hammer! The building got top marks and there have been no problems with it since then. It has also just won two prizes for its eco-friendly design.
