9.1. Модальные глаголы must / must not и конструкция don't have to

a) модальный глагол must The ball must hit the front wall. (This is necessary, part of the rules.) His opponent then has to hit the ball. (He has no choice.) You are to be home by midnight. (A firm order.) I have got to sit down. (It is essential, or I will collapse!) Strong obligation or necessity is expressed with must, has / have to, am / is / are to, or — mainly in spoken English — has / have got to.

b) модальный глагол must not The ball must not hit the ground. (It is necessary that this not happen; the rules do not allow it.) You can't use the car. (I do not permit you to do so.) You can't park here. (It is not allowed.) You are not to drink alcohol. (A firm order.) When permission is refused, or an action is forbidden, we use must not, can't, am / is / are not to.

c) конструкция don't have to You don't have to rely on the weather. (It is not necessary.) You needn't be a great athlete. (You can still play if you're not.) There's no need to rush. (You can choose not to rush.) You haven't got to go. (There is no obligation; you can stay or go.) To indicate a choice of action or the absence of obligation, we use don't / doesn't have to, needn't, there's no need to, and — again mainly in spoken English — haven't got to. Note that the negative and interrogative of have to use 'do', while have got to uses no auxiliary; and that doesn't / don't need to is sometimes used instead of needn't.

It must be one of the fastest-growing sports. (I suggest it is.) I must be losing weight. (I'm sure I am.) You must be Felix Catt. (I assume you are.) You must think I'm 9 years old. (Apparently, you think this.) There must have been eight of you. (I'm certain there were.) 'Must' has an important second use, indicating that the speaker assumes or is sure of the truth of his statement. Frequently, it is something that has just occurred to or become clear to the speaker.

9.3. Конструкция have + a + существительное

Have a game of squash. (We play games.) I'll have a rest, a cigarette, and a drink. (I'll rest, smoke a cigarette, and drink a glass of beer.) To have a bath. (To bathe.) To have a swim. (To swim.) Note this very common use of the verb 'have' in place of another main verb. Similarly with meals (but no article): To have dinner. (To eat dinner.) To have lunch / tea / breakfast. Did you have a good game? Do you have many beers? He doesn't have much dinner. Note that the present and past simple of 'have' must use the auxiliary 'do' in the negative and interrogative when used in this way.

English games: Squash

Squash is another of those peculiarly English ball games.

It was once confined to Britain and her colonies and played almost exclusively by members of the upper classes, but it must now be one of the world's fastest-growing sports, for the number of participants has increased three or fourfold in the last few years, and new courts are springing up in almost every corner of the world.

The court consists of a square room in which two players, equipped with rackets similar in shape to tennis rackets, have to strike a small rubber ball.

When a player strikes the ball, it may rebound from any of the four walls, but it must strike the front wall of the room before it touches the ground.

His opponent then has to hit the ball in his turn.

The ball must not bounce on the floor more than once before each player hits it; if a player fails to return the ball to the front wall or to hit the ball before it bounces twice, he loses the point.

One advantage of the game is that, since the court is covered, you don't have to rely on the weather.

Moreover you needn't be a great athlete and it isn't necessary to possess exceptional coordination to play the game competently.

At top level players have to be extremely fit and talented, but the average person can get good exercise and enjoy himself thoroughly even at his first attempt.

I've played three times this week and I reckon I've sweated off a couple of pounds each time.

Felix

Yes, but how many beers do you have after the game?

I always find I'm so thirsty after playing golf that I've got to drink two or three pints — and then I put on all the weight I lost during the round.

Gerry

I suppose you're right.

My waistline isn't getting any better.

I'm only kidding myself really.

Felix

Who did you play with?

Gerry

That chap Ted Sykes.

And I managed to beat him for the first time.

Felix

Did you?

You must be improving.

They say he's good enough for the club second team.

Gerry

Do they?

Perhaps there's a chance for me then.

Have another beer on me.

You haven't got to go yet, have you?

Well, I can't stay long.

We're having dinner with some friends tonight, and Gertie will be wild if I'm late.

Still, there's no need to rush, I'll have one more.
