On the 24^th of August 1991, Ukraine became an independent state. Today Ukraine is a democratic country with a parliamentary – presidential form of government.

Our parliament has 450 deputies, elections are held every four years.

The President of Ukraine is the head of the state and is elected directly by the voting for a term of 5 years with no more than two full terms. The territory of Ukraine administratively consists of 24 regions and one autonomous republic (The Republic of Crimea), which now is being annexed.

The state symbols of Ukraine are national flag and emblem. Blue-yellow state flag symbolizes the unity of blue sky and yellow wheat field. Another symbol is a trident, called “Tryzub”, dating back to Volodymyr Velykyi and Yaroslav Mudrii. The Ukrainian Anthem “Shche ne vmerla Ukraina” is written by a great poet Pavlo Chubynsky and composer Mykhailo Verbytsky.
