FIELDS OF DENTISTRY
The trend toward specialization among dentists has become increasingly apparent in recent years. Some of the speciality fields include oral surgery, which embraces procedures from tooth extraction to major surgery on the mouth and orthopaedic or prosthetic dentistry, which implies the making of artificial replacements for facial areas removed by surgery. Orthodontics is another dental speciality which has to do with the prevention and correction of abnormal positions of the teeth and jaws by means of braces and other mechanical devices. The dentist who spesializes in diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth - gums, gingiva - is a specialist in periodontics. Periodontics is a dental speciality concerned with oral diseases in children, and the dental roentgenologist specializes in dental diagnosis by means of X-ray films.
The dental profession, as a medical profession, has its standard of conduct which its practitioners are required to follow. The official organisation which formulates and maintains professional ethics is the American Association, with its affiliated and local societies. Nearly every dentist belongs to this group, which has done much to equip the dentist to perform a vital function in the health team.
