DENTAL THERAPY
Unit 1
1. Read the text, translate it into Russian. At the dental polyclinic
Our district dental polyclinic is a multi-storeyed building. When we come to the polyclinic, we go to the registry first. A registering clerk on duty asks our names, addresses, ages and occupation. He fills in or finds out our patients' cards and tells us to which doctor we must go. He makes an appointment with the doctors for a certain hour. Many specialists work at the dental polyclinic including therapeutists, surgeons, orthodontists, orthopedists, pedodontists and laboratory technicians. On the ground floor of the polyclinic we can find some examinational rooms, X-ray rooms, the surgical department and administrative rooms.
On the first floor there is a therapeutic department. Here we can see treatment rooms of therapeutists and orthodontists, where they receive their patients. During the treatment procedures the dentists examine oral cavities, drill and fill the cavities They treat diseases of the gums and oral mucosa. Therapeutists use high speed dental instruments, different burs of different sizes and materials (tungsten, carbide or diamond) and handpieces (excavators, spatulas, fogless mirrors, stopfers) for drilling, cleaning and filling the teeth. They use special pieces of wire to remove the pulp (to clean the tooth canal and to fill it) and different materials: abrasive, plastic and metal fillings, adhesive, retentive and composite resins, alcohol, iodine, ether and so on.
At the surgical department dental surgeons work. They must perform small surgical operations, open gum and tooth abscesses, give anaesthesia and extract teeth. For their work they need scalpels, syringes with the needles, tooth forceps, iodine, ammonium chloride, etc.
On the second floor there is an orthopaedic department. Here orthopaedists work. Their task is to make restorations or prostheses. For this purpose they make impressions of the teeth with the plastic paste or plaster cast. They use special spoon and tray for this procedure. They fit the suitable colour of the teeth, make different preparations for making porcelain or metaloceramic crowns, jacket crowns, veneer crowns, bridges and prostheses, partial or full dentures.
On the third floor there is a technical laboratory. Many technicians work there. They use special instruments: scalpels, spatulas, handpieces, cutting instruments, burs, stones for polishing and finishing work. They make false teeth using modern plastic and metal materials, porcelain, ceramics and others. They fire them in special furnaces and polish and cut them.
