College life.

My name is Denis. I’m sixteen years old. I live in Moscow city, Russia. I have recently finished my school and entered the College of sphere of services. It is one of the best colleges in the city. Besides, I have always wanted to become a cook after school. I really like this college and some of my close friends joined me to study here. My parents have always wanted me to be a lawyer, but I have made up my mind to become a cook or a technologist of public catering. The entrance exams included Mathematics and Russian and I passed both of them with excellent marks. I am delighted to study such subjects as Public Catering, Confectionery, English, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Education and else. Our college is rather well equipped. There is a large sports ground outside and one gym inside. We have a huge laboratory where we train to cook every week. We divide into teams and each team prepares from two to four courses. Then our teachers compare our dishes, say our mistakes and give us marks. There is also a huge library with a good choice of books by profession.

Twice a year we do practice work for 1-2 month. Each group does their practice at different restaurants: Vogue Café, the State Duma, Metropol and others.

At the end of the practice we take the examination. We have to prepare two courses: the main dish and salad, soup or desert for choice.

The practice gives us much information, experience and, of course, the confidence, that our choice of the profession was right.

The usual formal training period for a chef is two to four years in catering college. They often spend the summer in work placements. In some cases this is modified to 'day-release' courses; a chef will work full-time in a kitchen as an apprentice and then would have allocated days off to attend catering college. These courses can last between one to three years.

Unit 2. Конструкция there is (there are).

Конструкция there is (there are) сообщает о месте нахождения того или иного предмета, лица, информация о которых еще неизвестна.

There is a cup on the table. На столе чашка.

The cup is on the table. Чашка (находится) на столе. – В данном предложении подчеркивается место, где находится уже известный собеседнику предмет.

There is a cup on the table. На столе (находится) чашка. – В данном предложении акцентируется именно предмет, находящийся на определенном, уже известном собеседнику месте (на столе).

Таким образом, оборот there is/there are используется для передачи новой информации о предмете, находящемся в известном месте.

Предложения согласно правилу с конструкцией there is/ there are переводятся с конца, то есть с обстоятельства места или времени. Причем слово there опускается, однако в некоторых случаях оно может быть использовано дважды, если есть смысл указать значение «там».

There are some mistakes in the test. – В работе есть несколько ошибок.

There is nobody there. – Там никого нет.

Если в предложении с оборотом there is имеется несколько подлежащих, то глагол to be обычно согласуется с подлежащим, которое следует непосредственно за ним.

There is a table and five chairs in the room. - В комнате стол и пять стульев.

There are five chairs and a table in the room. - В комнате пять стульев и стол.
