Unit 4. Drinks/ beverages. Drinking cultures around the world.

As we find many different traditions and cultures around the world, we find that drinking cultures also differ depending on traditions and regions of the world. People in different countries drink at different times of the day and for different reasons.

In China we find that two weeks before their New Year there is an increase in drinking. This is part of the traditions of celebration and feasting to celebrate the New Year. These drinking sessions are shared with friends and family, and is not limited to a specific type of alcohol.

In France it is customary to drink red wine with dinner. Being one of the biggest wine products in the world, the French are very specific and serious about their wine culture. Wine is considered to be healthy for the heart in addition to being a great way to accompany a meal. White wine is also a popular drink in France and usually associated with white meat. French traditions stipulate that we take sweet white wine with white meat and dry red wine with red meat.

As the years go by and cultures and traditions continue integrate their drinking cultures will in turn continue to change.
