SEEING A FRIEND OFF

Three men were sitting at a bar near a railway-station. They had asked the railway porter to tell them when the train was due. Some time later the porter came to say that the train was coming in. "Oh," said the men, "we have time for just one more drink." They took another drink and hurried out, but their train had already left.

They went back to the bar. An hour later the second train arrived, and the same thing happened. They missed the train again. Two hours later the porter came and told them that the last train was due in five minutes. Again the men waited for a few minutes to have one more drink and when they came out the train had already started. Two of the men caught the train. But the third man missed the train and walked back to the bar.

"By the way," the barman asked him, when he came in, "what town are your friends going to?"

"I don't know, where they are going to," the man answered. "They just came down to the station to see me off."

TOO MUCH FOR THEM

Some young men were travelling in a smoking compartment of a railway carriage. Just as the train was about to start the door suddenly opened, аnd an old woman came into their compartment. The young men wanted to have the compartment for themselves and they said: "This is a smoking carriage." But the woman did not listen to them. She came into their compartment and sat down. They decided to smoke as much as they could and hoped that she would have to leave the carriage soon. There was a lot of smoke in the compartment and the young men began to feel bad.

In a quarter of an hour to their great surprise the woman took out a pipe and began smoking too.

The youngmen had to change their compartment very soon.

6. Tell Mr. Nelson that as you are going to place a big order with them you ask them to reduce their prices. Say they are higher than the world prices.

7. Tell Mr. Todd you have improved your models lately and you are going to sell them at a higher price. Ask if the firm can take part deliveries.

DISCUSSING A CONTRACT

The export department of Goodman & Co. sent the Russian Trade Delegation their offer of computers.

When Mr. Jackson came back from Edinburgh, he and Mr. Zotov considered the prices, the terms of payment and delivery and the technical information of the offer. They found that their computers were of the latest design. So Mr. Jackson decided to meet Mr. Lipman again to discuss the offer.

DIALOGUE

Jackson: Good afternoon, Mr. Lipman.

Lipman: Good afternoon, Mr. Jackson. Will you take a seat? Have a cigarette, please.

Jackson: Thank you.

Lipman: Did you enjoy your trip to Edinburgh?

Jackson: Yes, It was pleasant, indeed. I also had a good opportunity to contact businessmen of different British companies.

Lipman: I see. Now, Mr. Jackson, what do you say to our offer?

Jackson: On the whole your terms and conditions are acceptable to us. But I'm afraid your prices are not quite competitive. They are some what higher that the prices of other firms. Could you reduce your price by 7 per cent?

Lipman: I say, Mr. Jackson, we've sold our computers at the price of $... each. They are the best on the world market at this price. However, if you increase your order, we'll give you a discount of 5 per cent.

Jackson: I believe we can buy 15 more computers.

Lipman: Fine. That will settle the price problem.

Jackson: Quite so. Now, there is another point, Mr. Lipman. Your delivery dates don't suit us. We require the first parcel of 20 computers a month after we sign the contact.

Lipman: So I understand that we are to ship the first parcel in December. And what about the remaining goods?

Jackson: We can accept them in March.

Lipman: Very good. Well, Mr. Jackson, as regards the terms of payment I hope you'll pay against shipping documents by a Letter of Credit. You are to open it with the London Bank after our cable that the goods are ready for shipment.

Jackson: Quite right. I'll be glad to sing the contract when you get it ready.

Lipman: We can sing it tomorrow. I'll be glad, Mr. Jackson, if you and Mr. Zotov join our Sales Manager and me for lunch after we sing the contract.

Jackson: Thank you.

Lipman: So we hope to see you at our office at 12 tomorrow.

Jackson: Good. See you tomorrow.

Lipman: Good- bye.
