Text 2 American and English Money

American money system is very simple. It is decimal like ours. There are only two units: cent and dollar. The word “dollar” originates from the German word “Thaler” (долина). There are several versions of the origin of the sign $. But the most popular is the following: this sign is the result of the evolution of the letters P and S, which is the abbreviation of the word “pesos” (the plural form of the word “peso”, Spanish currency).

100 cents is a dollar. There are the following silver coins:

one dollar

50-cent piece (half dollar)

25-cent piece (quarter)

10-cent piece (dime)

5-cent piece (“nickel”)

1-cent piece (“penny”)

A five-cent coin is called “nickel”, because it’s made of nickel. A one-cent coin is bronze or copper. Sometimes it’s colloquially called “penny”.

There is also paper money. Each dollar bill denomination has a prescribed portrait. The portraits appearing on these notes are:

George Washington (1st President) on the $1 dollar bill

Abraham Lincoln (16th President) on the $5 dollar bill

Alexander Hamilton (1st Treasury Secretary) on the $10 dollar bill

Andrew Jackson (7th President) on the $20 dollar bill

Ulysses S. Grant (18th President) on the $50 dollar bill

Benjamin Franklin (scientist, diplomat, public figure) on the $100 dollar bill.

Notes of the $500, $1000, $5000, $10000, $100000 denominations are being withdrawn from circulation. The national motto “In God we trust” appears on all the US bank-notes and coins.

The system of English money is rather peculiar and may seem strange to those who are used to the decimal system. There are the following units:

Pound-(p-sterling)

Shilling-s

Penny-d

There are 20 shillings in a pound and there are 12 pence in a shilling.

There are the following copper coins:

Penny-d

Halfpenny-1/2

Farthing-1/4

Sixpence-6d

Shilling-1s

Two shilling piece

Half-crown-2s6d.

There also used to be a silver coin worth 5s, called crown, but it is out of use now. English paper money - 1pound note, 10s, 5, 10, 50, 100, 1000.
