Task one. Get ready to translate first three passages and to give a summary of the text. Linux Admin Manual Is a Great Reference Tool That's Not for Dummies

By Jack M. Germain 04/24/12

A Beginner's Guide is a straightforward how-to book. Its focus is to make Linux management a skill set made simple. But readers new to the Linux fold still need some working experience in IT. Even author Wale Soyinka cautions that his book does have a bit of a pre-requisite. It's not an "Idiot's Guide to Linux Admin."

In this Sixth Edition book, the author provides an extensive update on the latest Linux distros. His book is an essential guide for admins handling Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu. Offering how-to dogma on any one of these distros is a major challenge. Putting all of them in one volume crams serious guidelines and admin tidbits into nearly 700 pages.

Soyinka is no stranger to charting a clear path through technical log jams for IT workers to follow. He has written an library of Linux administration training materials. The author spends his time evangelizing about open source while serving as both a system and a network administrator. When he is not fully embroiled with those duties, Soyinka also serves as a hacker and Linux entrepreneur.

The title of his February release may be a bit of a misnomer. It is much more than a beginner's guide. It could very well be the definitive go-to reference source for seasoned Linux admins as well. The author treats must-know topics on installing and customizing Linux, working with command line interface (CLI) and graphical user interface (GUI) structures and configuring both Internet and intranet services.

Perhaps the most useful instruction, however, is Soyinka's treatment of interoperating Linux with Windows systems. He spices his explanations with real-world examples that help readers put the techniques he details into practice. This results in a technical manual that reads with a lot more flavor than you would expect about textbook-level instruction.

James Scott, a computer interface researcher based at Microsoft Research labs in Cambridge, UK, will present a paper at next month's Mobile Human-Computer Interaction conference in Lisbon, Portugal, showing how LucidTouch's panel sensors have evolved into a mobile device with a qwerty keyboard on the rear.

RearType supports 10-fingered touch typing. There are two rows of four buttons on the front for thumbs; the qwerty keyboard is split in two, as on a split ergonomic keyboard, with each half rotated through 90 degrees. The thumb-controlled front-facing buttons include frequently used keys including shift, delete and enter (see photos, right).

Pompano Beach, FL-based Titan Salvage won the bid to raise the wreck of COSTA CONCORDIA from its current resting place off Giglio Island in Tuscany, Italy.  The plan will be to remove the capsized ship in one piece with assistance from Micoperi, an Italian marine contractor, and tow it to an Italian port.  Whether the ship (in which 32 people perished when it was steered onto a reef and capsized on January 13) will be scrapped or rebuilt remains the subject of much conjecture.

Work is going to begin in May and the wreck is expected to be removed within a year.  The salvage crews will be based in Civitavecchia in order to not further disturb the fishing and port operations of Giglio.  Titan beat out five other bidders, including the Dutch firm Smit.

Memphis-based Great American Steamboat Company’s President, Christopher Kyte, shares an exclusive with MaritimeMatters today. “I am happy to report that last Friday, the Great American Steamboat Company received its approval to ‘sell’ from the Federal Maritime Commission and we open for reservations here on Sept 30, 2011.”

The 436 passenger, 1995-built steamboat AMERICAN QUEEN was purchased from the U.S Maritime Administration in late July and has since departed the US Reserve Fleet in Beaumont, Texas for a complete overhaul and refit at the Bollinger Shipyard in Sulphur, Louisiana.

Kyte added, “Refurbishment of the boat is right on schedule and the most important aspect of all — great food — is being addressed by Regina Charboneau of Natchez, who was my executive chef for the luxury trains ‘Houston’ and ‘Los Angeles’ in their heyday, when they regularly were praised in the pages of Gourmet Magazine, et al. Many of the great longtime crew people from Delta Queen Steamboat Company are also coming back, so it is all shaping up very well.”

“I am also happy to report that we have assembled the sales team that were with Delta Queen Steamboat Company in its heyday.  And in lieu of the customary e-docs, we will have real tickets with real luggage tags.”

The maiden voyage of the AMERICAN QUEEN is scheduled for April of 2012.
