Mass Media.

Newspapers are especially important nowadays and we can’t imagineour life without them. There are dozens of them on every news-stand. There are newspapersfor professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers, for men and women, forsports fans, for those who are interested in gardening, fishing, hunting, for those whokeep pets and so on. Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy andfinance, some aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain politicalopinion and people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you canalways find a paper which suits your interests. The advantage of all the newspapers isthat they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information. But itis bad that very often newspapers are full of dramatic events about natural disasters, plane crashes, murders and robberies. Having read such articles, you feel depressed and itseems that the world is being ruined. One more disadvantage is that newspapers are full ofgossip about different celebrities and their private lives. There are also a lot of photosof them in their most intimate moments. I think it shouldn’t be allowed, besides half ofthis information is unreliable.

The main source of news for millions of people is television. With its help we can seeeverything with our own eyes. It is the window on the world which gives us an opportunityto “travel” all over the world. TV gives us food for thought, introduces us to newideas and activities. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds. It helps us torelax after a hard day’s work and to escape from reality. There is always a greatvariety of programmes on TV: news and sport programmes, talk shows and TV games, documentaries and feature films, concerts and theatre performances. But nowadays there isa lot of violence on TV. As George Mikes once said, TV teaches us “how to kill, to rob,to shoot and to poison.” We watch hits where people are killed before our very eyes. Itdulls our sensitivity and when we learn about one more tragedy or catastrophe, we perceiveit as something quite natural, just like an everyday affair. Some people become TV addictsand they won’t give up TV for anything in the world. Nowadays some children are soaddicted to TV that they are not interested in anything else: they don’t read books, communicate with adults and other children, they move less, speak less and they even thinkless. Though there are a lot of excellent educational programmes for children andprogrammes designed for schools. They help children to extend their knowledge, expose themto different people and places and to develop their imagination.

Many people prefer the radio. It is good to listen to it in the car, or in the openair, or when you do something about the house.

The Internet has recently become another important source ofinformation. It is regarded as the latest addiction to trap thousands of people which hasbeen blamed for broken relationships, job losses, financial ruin and even suicide.Psychologists now recognize Internet Addiction Syndrome (IAS) as a new illness that couldcause serious problems and ruin many lives. COULD YOU LIVE WITHOUT TV?

Most people today see the world through the medium of TV. In many countries, it is not only a source of news and entertainment but also of education. There are lots of educational programs on different subjects in many countries.

There are cable TV networks, which specialize in sport, movies, health care, politics, and many other areas of interest to people. It is hard to imagine the world without TV. We hurry home to catch a favorite cartoon before supper, then watch the news during supper, and finally relax with a cup of tea after supper - while we watch the latest popular soap opera, mystery, or a variety show.

Daytime TV is for housewives and students. A housewife may do her ironing to a melodrama. Students can waste their time in front of “The Young and the Restless”.

TV is a baby-sitter for many children whose parents are too busy to give them the constant attention they demand.

It is a company for the lonely.

It is a relief from study, and it is an escape from the realities of life.

The question is, is it a good thing? Many parents forbid their children to watch TV or, at least, try to control how much TV they watch. They believe that TV watching makes children stay at home too much. They don’t get outside to play enough and develop unhealthy bodies. Their eyes are injured too, and they end up wearing glasses earlier than they would have normally. Moreover, there is too much violence and mindlessness on TV, so the mental development of people is slowed. They never really learn to think or imagine. Rather, they are “spoon-fed” with everything and never learn how to analyze things. They begin to think that there is a simple solution to all problems, usually shooting the “bad guy”.

This could be dangerous for society. A non-thinking public, which sees violence as a good solution to many of life problems, is a very good thing for power-seeking demagogues who only want to manipulate public opinion for their own interests.

There are many other objections to TV. However, there are also many positive aspects to TV.

    - to play sport;                                - to learn foreign languages;

    - to go out for walks;                      - to go to the theater or cinema more often than nowadays?

We have just studied the text – “TV is a one-eyed monster”. Let’s check our knowledge of the text. Give the English equivalents of the words and phrases:

– средства массовой информации

– обращаться к

– грамотный (умеющий читать и писать)

– неграмотный

– вредный

– чудовище

– свободное время

– зависимый от, увлеченный чем-то

– подверженный действию чего-то

– низкопробный, некачественный

– to be addicted to the telly

– o neglect one’s duties

– to be unwilling to do one’s work.

Now let’s two or three students speak this text. And you will help me to listen to the others. The students who answered better go out of the classroom and listen to the student there and put him (her) his mark.

Now let’s use our vocabulary in the sentences:

Let’s play a little. You have 2 sheets of paper with the parts of the sentences.

Match the two parts of sentences.

1. Television brings events… (like the Olympic Games into millions of home).

2. The funeral was… (broadcast to the hole nation).

3. See today’s paper for… (a list of TV programmes in your area).

4. The final episode will… (be shown on Channel 4 tonight).

5. What genres seem… (to dominate prime-time viewing?)

6. Most of the educational programmes… (are really good and informative).

7. We tend to view more and… (listen less, as time goes on).

8. We have an opportunity… (to take part in lots of talk shows or quiz games on TV)

9. Television makes people argue and… (discuss things, think and talk more).

10. Television may be the cause of… (many disputes and conflicts in the family).

And next task will be to fill in the text with the following words.

Pick up coming plot

Turned off characters television

Soap opera channel watched

Charm acting hour

By heart

Don Bradley turned the ... to a different  ... and for an  ... or so   ... a lovely  ... that he knew  ... having seen it at least ten times. He didn’t have to follow the ... .

He knew the film so well that he couldn’t ... the story anywhere along the way. The ... of it was in the ... and the ....

The film came to its happy ...  and he ... the television.

So; now you have enough information about TV.

Agree or disagree:

1. Television kills conversation. Does it?

2. TV makes people think and talk more. Is that true?

3. Comedies can have more influence on viewers. Can it?

4. TV is terribly bad for people’s eyes.

5. People get addicted to certain television series.

6. Children don’t get enough fresh air.

Now give your opinion about TV, its advantages and disadvantages in your short dialogues; try to use all words and phrases you’ve learned.

THE EFFECTS OF MASS-MEDIA

Positive

Negative

You can learn a lot.

It takes a lot of your time.

I’m interested what mass-media the most popular are? Do you know?

TELEVISION has changed our lives in many ways. Many people now spend more time watching TV than doing anything else. Researchers in the USA have said than when most students leave school they have spent 11,000 hours in the classroom and 22,000 hours watching television.

But what effect does this have?

Now divide into groups and find benefits and dangers of television.

Benefits of television

Dangers

  1. Television helps us to learn more about the world and to know and see many new things.

  2. Television can make us passive. We don’t have to think and our brains become lazy.

  3. It has increased the popularity of sports and arts.

  4. It takes time away from activities such s reading, conversation, and games.

  5. It is an enjoyable way to relax.

  6. It encourages us to buy things that we don’t need, and can make us unhappy with our own lives.

  7. It has made us aware of our global responsibilities. In 1985, for example, 1.5 billion people in 147 countries watched TV pop concert and helped to collect more than $100 million for people in Africa.

  8. It gives a false picture of society. A study in 1994 showed that people who watch a lot of television are more afraid of crime. They also think that there is a lot more crime than there really is.

What will in future with television? There is onе point of view. Here is another task for you. Read the passage about future of television and complete the text with the words from the box.

THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION

In future, we probably won’t watch television at all.

I think television (1)….will disappear. We’ll use a computer and choose the programs that we want to watch. (2)… will then get the program from another computer, probably on the other side of the world. We‘ll be able to tell the computer what type of (3) ….we like (for example, types of films, (4)…., documentaries, etc.) and the computer will search for those programs and then give us a (5)… to choose from. The pictures that we see will also be different. They will be (6)….. This means that they will have three (7)…. – they will have height, (8)…. We will be able to look around the pictures that we see.

The computer, dimensions, channels, ‘holographic’, programs, music, ‘menu’, width and depth.

But if you are in a car, you always listen to the music on the radio. While listening to the radio, people learn a lot about the life style in other countries. Here is one of my favorite songs and it’s my own translation of the song.

Teacher: We spoke a lot of the Internet, TV, and Radio. But at our conference are participants from “The Times”. Some words to you.

Match the headlines with the articles.

  1. After years of research, scientists from Holland have invented a new tulip. The flower has petals which change color three times during its life. They start green, turn pink, and finish red.

  2. A hoaxer in Brazil has sold bottled tap water to thousands of people for 20 US dollars a liter. He says the water is from the moon – which, in fact, has no water on it at all.

  3. Boy pupils in Glasgow have won a discrimination case. In court they complained that their school allowed only girls to wear earrings. Are they happy with the result? Not exactly. The school rules have changed, but things haven’t improved for the boys. Now no one can wear earrings at the school.

  4. A new-married student couple in Cambridge has celebrated their wedding in an unusual way by jumping. In all their wedding gear, into the River Cam. The director of ‘ Brides ‘n’ Grooms’ – the local wedding outfit shop- has spoken to other couples to discourage them from following suit.

  5. Leeds police have arrested two men who mugged a bank clerk and stole his bank bag. The attack happened last Thursday when the man was on his way to work. The thieves ran off with the bag, but when they opened it, they found only a tuna sandwich. The bank clerk hasn’t explained why his packed lunch was in the bag.

a. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES b. FAST FOOD c. Multi-colored petals d. MOON WATER e. MAD MARITAL PLUNGE

Taking into account all your reports it can believe that the media brings people closer.

And finally I’d say “He who owns the information, he owns the world”.

The Pros and Cons of Using the Internet

Millions of people around the world use the Internet to search for information(1).

You can get needed information at any time, quickly and easily. One can use Internet for recreational purposes(2). Here we can find a lot of photographs, pictures, music and video.

You can share your hobbies with chat groups(3). And, of course you can play computer games(4) through WWW, competing(5) with partners from other countries and continents. There are also educational benefits(6): you can visit museums, gardens, cities, learn foreign languages and meet new friends. At last, you can send mail fast and cheaply(7).

Its benefits are numerous. But much can be said against it: at first, sitting on a chair for hours is not healthy(8). Besides, staring at screen for long periods of time is damaging to the eyes(9). Many people can become dependent on the Internet(10). Making “chat friends” is not the same as meeting people in real life. There are violence (11) and manipulation of children (12).

There is too much advertising instead of real information (13). Hackers who break into computer system can steal(14) information; viruses can infect our files – the question of security is rather difficult.

At last, the Internet is rather expensive(15).

To sum up(16): The Internet has both bad and good points. Despite the heath problems(17), lack of personal interaction(18) the benefits are invaluable(19). Any problems which still exist can be solved. And we have to make the best possible use of the Internet(20).

NEWSPAPERS IN BRITAIN

All newspapers in Britain, daily or Sunday ones, can be broadly divided into the quality press and the popular press. The quality newspapers are also known as «heavies» and they usually deal with domestic and overseas news, with detailed and extensive coverage of sports and cultural events. Besides they also carry financial reports, travel news, and book and film reviews.

The popular press, or the «populars», are also known as tabloids, as they are smaller in size being halfsheet in format. Some people also call them the «gutter press» — offering news for people less interested in daily detailed news reports. They are characterized by large headlines, carry a lot of big photographs, and concentrate on the personal aspects of news, with reports of the recent sensational and juicy bits of events, not excluding the Royal Family. The language of a tabloid is much more colloquial than that of quality newspapers.

Here is a possibly witty though true classification of English newspapers:

The Times is read by the people who run the country.

The Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country.

The Guardian is read by the people who think about running the country.

The Mail is read by wives of the people who run the country.

The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be.

The Express is read by the people who think it is still run as it used to be.

The Sun is read by the people who don’t care who runs the country as long as the naked girl on page three is attractive.
