Cambridge is world-famous principally as a university city. Its history began more than eight hundred years ago with the development of the university and colleges. Peterhouse, founded in 1184, was the first college, and now there are more than twenty. One of the great architectural glories of Britain is King's College Chapel built between 1446 and 1515.

Cambridge cannot compete with other towns of the same size in the field of industrial development, but there are many important light industries in the town.

Cambridge is easily reached by train from London.

WORLD'S BIGGEST TELESCOPE

The world's biggest telescope can be found near the Zelendtukskaya village (Northern Caucasus) at 2,100 metres above sea level. It was designed and manufactured at the Leningrad Optical and Mechanical Plant. Its basic characteristics are: height-42 metres; weight-about 850 tons; diameter of the primary mirror-six metres. It is bigger than the telescope with a five-metre mirror at the Mount Palomar Observatory in the USA.

The most important part of the telescope is the primary mirror which weighs 42 tons. The blank1 from which it was made weighed 70 tons and a jpecial shop2 had to be built to cast the mirror. To ensure that the consistency of the glass would be uniform throughout,3 two years were spent cooling the bfpnk. The mirror's area is nearly 30 square metres and it has been polishes, to a degree of accuracy within one о n thousandth of a millimetre.

The following gives an idea of what the telescope can do. With it a candle flame can be seen from a distance of 25,000 kilometres. Its power is 40-50 million times greater than that of the naked eye.4

The huge telescope has a high speed electronic control machine, so it isn't more difficult to use it than an ordinary microscope. Astronomers have used the telescope to take several unique photographs of stars.
