I. Прочтите текст и постарайтесь понять его общее содержание:

SEASON OF VOUTH'

(an extract)

Our home was a red-brick cottage with an unpainted iron roof opposite the Melbourne General Cemetery, only a couple of miles from the heart of Melbourne. The street was very wide and it went in a straight line from the city to a far outer northern suburb. From our cottage you could see the top of the glass roof of the public library at the city end and the sky meeting the street at the northern end, so that I used to think that must be the end of the world.2 The street was very noisy during part of the day. Trams passed by and made the house tremble slightly.

I liked our street most of all early in the morning, when there was a great silence. A short time after this you began to hear the carts with heavy horses on their way to the markets. The windows grew paler. A tram passed, trend a motor car. There was the conversation of the people in the street and all these sounds were beginning to melt into the great voice of awakening Melbourne.

SPORTS AND GAMES IN GREAT BRITAIN

All young people in Britain who are still at school have to take part in some kind of sports. Boys play football, rugby or cricket; girls play hockey, netball' or tennis. Naturally, there are always some people who detest sports and games and they try to give excuses to the sports master

every week to avoid sports lessons. But there are also many teenagers enjoying sports who continue to go in for sports after they leave school. Some of them continue to play tennis, for example, simply because they enjoy it and like to meet people at the tennis club during the weekend. There are others who play tennis because they want to become famous and play on the centre court at Wimbledon-one of the most important courts in the world. The Junior Lawn Tennis Championships are held there every autumn.

A sport which is very popular amongst young people who enjoy the water is underwater swimming using an aqualung. Young people can swim at the National Recreation Centre at Crystal Palace in London and at other places.
