YURI GAGARIN

On April 12, 1961 for the first time in the history of humanity, a human being travelled into the outer space. It was a Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. He was born in a village in Smolensk region on March 9, 1934. His early education was interrupted by the invasion of the fascist troops to the peaceful Soviet villages and towns. After the war he attended a vocational school and was trained in foundry work.1

His interest in flying led him to a Soviet Air Force school which he graduated with honours2 as an air force lieutenant in 1957. He served as a test pilot,3 and then in 1960 he joined the group of cosmonauts who were trained for orbital flight and it was upon him that the choice fell in 1961. Gagarin was the first man placed in orbit round the Earth. He remained in orbit 89.1 minutes, rising as high above the surface as 187.68 miles and travelling at a velocity that reached 17.400 miles an hour.,,

Thus, only three and a half years after the opening of the Space age with the orbiting of Sputnik 1, man was in space.

DMITRY MENDELEYEV

Mendeleyev was born in Tobolsk in 1834 in a large family in which Dmitry Mendeleyev was the youngest son. His father was principal of the local high school. Blindness ended his father's career while Mendeleyev was still very young.

The pension his father received couldn't support the large family and the family suffered great hardships. In 1855 Mendeleyev finished college in St. Petersburg with honours1 and continued his education abroad. In 1865 he became professor of chemistry at the St. Petersburg University. He was the most capable and interesting lecturer in Russia and one of the best in all Europe at that time.

Mendeleyev arranged all the elements known in his time in order of atomic weights arid also in rows one under the other, so that elements with similar valence fell into a vertical column.2 These elements show similarities in many chemical properties. Thus the famous Periodic Table was created. Later he left gaps in the Table and announced that the gaps represented elements not yet discovered.

In 1955 a newly discovered element (number 101) was named Mende-levium in honour of the great scientist.
