OUR HOUSE

(an extract from "А Bunch of Ratbags"')

after William Dick

The houses in our street all looked alike-small, old, dirty. But they were our homes. We lived in the second house on the right looking down from the hill, a single-fronted house that was built on a block of land twenty feet wide and about one hundred feet long. In comparison with the width of the block, the length of the yard seemed enormous. The house was separated from the street by a broken old fence with numerous gaps here and there. The fence was slowly falling over, but nobody worried. Anyway, it was falling inwards so it didn't matter because it wouldn't be blocking the street.2

There were two gates in the fence; the one leading to the front door was in good shape, but the one opposite the footpath had a broken top hinge3 and the gate was always open. Actually, we never worried much about the gate being open because we had a trellis gate at the end of the veranda that kept out stray6 animals and people, and kept our animals in.

There was a little stone path connecting the first gate mentioned to our broken-down veranda. The veranda roof leaked and the veranda boards were rotted and twisted.

I. Прочтите текст и постарайтесь понять его общее содержание:

LEV LANDAU

Landau, a world-famous Soviet physicist, was born in Baku in 1908. At the age of fourteen he began to study at the University and then moved on to Leningrad where he continued his education. In 1927 he graduated from the Leningrad University and then he spent some years in Copenhagen working together with the Danish physicist Niels Bohr. Later he went on to Cambridge where he studied under Rutherford.

In 1935 he pioneered the mathematical treatment of magnetic domains,' small regions in substances such as iron, in which all the atomic magnets are lined up at a given direction.2 It is this that gives rise to ferromagnetism, the strongest variety of magnetism. In 1937 he was appointed head of a section at the Institute for Physical Problems in Moscow, where Kapitza, another world-famous physicist, was working, and Landau's interest turned to low-temperature phenomena too. In 1941 Landau produced a theoretical treatment of the properties of helium II in terms of3 quantum mechanics. In 1950s he turned to helium-3, a rare isotope of helium and predicted unusual properties for it at very low temperatures. For his studies in this direction Landau was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1962.
