The Australian Stevedoring Industry Association2 announced its intention not to engage men for wharf labour who had been exempted3 from work in the holds4 of ships, until all unexempted men were employed. This was regarded as an action against the older and injured workers, still capable of work on the wharves. A meeting gathered to declare the workers' determination to defend the rights of aged and injured union members. As David went about among the men he marvelled at the spirit animating them: men of magnificent physique5 and strength were standing in the sunshine with bare muscular arms and legs, to express their indignation at the repressive measures. Older men whose powerful bodies were bowed with years of heavy toil, and whose faces and speech held the wrathe of indomitable battlers,7 still put up a fight for the rights of fellow-unionists.

David felt he was getting closer to the people, better understanding their strength and their lives.
