Great britain

Great Britain is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles lie to the north-west of Europe. They include two large islands - Great Britain and Ireland and about 5000 small islands.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is washed by the Irish Sea, the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel. The total area is 244.000 square kilometers.

The surface of England and Ireland is flat, but the surface of Scotland and Wales is mountainous. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland.

There are many rivers and beautiful lakes in the country. The rivers are not long. The chief rivers are the Severn, the Thames and the Trent. The climate is mild. It is typically maritime. The winters are warm, the summers are cool and the weather is very changeable.

The population is over 56 million. The capital is London. The main industrial centres are Sheffild, Birmingham, Manchester.

Great Britain is a highly - developed, industrial, capitalist country. Shipbuilding, machine-building, electronic engineering now are the main branches of Great Britain's industry.

Great Britain is a monarchy, but the power of the Queen is limited by the Parliament. Parliament consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
