  1. The environmental problems of the western nations

Western Europe has the same basic environmental problems, but they take different forms in each country. Already if you catch a fish in the Seine near Paris it may be blind and without scales, a victim of pollution. In the Phine you will catch no fish at all.

The Mediterranian is actually dying from pollution.

It is far to say, that a considerable effort has been made in Britain with regard to the Thames. By 1949 it was being described as a striking black mass with no fish and almost no oxygen. There was an outcry and something had to be done. Legislation stopped the flow of industrial waste into the river, and nearly all the sewage is treated before it gets to the water. Fish have come back and one salmon has been caught.

One of Britain’s environmental successes has been the control of air pollution especially in London. Thirty years ago hundreds of people died every year from the dreadful London smogs. Since then London and many other cities have become smokeless zones, areas where no coal fires are allowed. But now the increase in traffic is threatening serious air pollution problems in cities once again.

The most common from of air pollution comes from cigarette smoke which pollutes many public places like cinemas, pubs, and restaurants.

Traffic and aircraft can cause serious noise pollution.

Friends of the Earth suggest that the bicycle is the best way to travel because it’s cheap, quite and a good form of exercise.

Завдання № 1.Перекладіть та вивчіть нову лексику:

Population, growing, grandparents, family, countries, divorced, breakfast, afternoon, usually, together, mid-afternoon, earlier, evenings, together, clothes.

Завдання № 2. Прочитайте та перекладіть текст.

British and American families are small. In fact the population of both Britain and the USA have nearly stopped growing. In the old days, a “tupical” family had a father, a mother and two or three children, with grandparents living near. Most children still live in this kind of family, but in both countries there is a growing number of “single parent families”, with only one parent. Some parents are because they are divorced. But many other young parents don’t get married at all.

A tupical British family has a car, a colour TV set , a washing machine and a cat or dog as well. They start the day at about 7 o’clok, have breakfast at 8 and are off to work by 8.30. More and more women now go out work as well as men. Children have lunch at at abaut 12.30 and come home at 4 in the afternoon. Their parents are usually at home by 6 o’clock, and the family eats together at 6.30 or 7. In the evenings, father may go to the pub for a drink or at home and watch TV with the others. Young children bed early , at about 8 o’clock , two or three hours before their parents. A tupical American family has more money than a British family. Some have two or three cars, large modern kitchens and more electrical goods. They eat more meat and spend more on clothes. But their daily program is nearly the same. Like British children, American children eat lunch at school, come home in mid-afternoon and go to bed earlier than their parents.

Past Continuous образуется из вспомогательного глагола to be в Past Indefinite и причастия настоящего времени основного глагола:

В воспросительной форме вспомогательный глагол ставится перед подлежащим:

What were you telling him? Что вы ему говорили?

В устной речи в отрицательной и вопросительно-отрицательной формах вместо was not и were not употребляются преимущественно сокращенные формы wasn’t и weren’t:

He wasn’t working. Wasn’t he working?

They weren’t they workingю Weren’t they working?

Употребление Past Continuous

Past Continuos употребляется для выражения действия, происходившего, длившегося в определенный момент в прошлом. На время действия обычно указывают также обстоятельственные слова at two o’clock, at midnight, at that moment, at 5 o’clock, или придаточные предложения с глаголом-сказуемые в Past Indefinite:
