4.9 After landing

Exercise 4.9.1 Read and translate the text.

Hong Kong Tower: ’Speedbird two five, vacate on Alpha nine and continue with Alpha eastbound and ground one two one six’.

As the speed drops, the rudder pedals become less effective in steering the jet so John begins using the tiller. He guides the jet smoothly on to a rapid-exit taxiway near the end of the runway. Harry calls the ground controller and advises of the assigned gate.

First Officer R/T: ‘Ground, good afternoon, Speedbird two five just vacating the left on Alpha nine for November twenty two.’

Hong Kong Ground: ’Speedbird two five, ground, taxi Alpha hold short of Alpha one one. Your bay, November two two, is occupied by another aircraft. I’ll call you back shortly.’

The Captain moves the speedbrake lever forward to slow the spoiler panels. Harry proceeds with the After Landing checklist. He confirms the speedbrakes are down: he moves the flap selector forward to retract the flaps: reaches to the overhead panel and rotates the auxiliary power unit (APU) switch to the start position; turns OFF the strobe lights, sets the stabilizer trim to 6 units; and turns OFF the autobrakes.

Hong Kong Ground: ’Speedbird two five, bay change to November two four, taxi Alpha one one, Bravo niner to bay November two four.’

Victor Alpha makes a slow right turn to enter the tarmac area around the terminal. It is just a short taxi across the ramp to the assigned gate on the north side of the terminal.

Approaching the stand, Harry calls ‘Doors to manual and cross-check’ on the PA, the cue for the flight attendants to disarm the emergency slides on the cabin doors. The inadvertent deployment of a slide would not only be embarrassing and expensive but the explosive force used to inflate the slide could be dangerous to ground personnel. The door display is selected on the lower EICAS to confirm the switch is made on each door.

John moves the steering tiller anticlockwise to start a left turn into the gate. A display on the side of the terminal building helps guide him into the proper position. It shows whether the jet is left or right of the centerline and also counts down the metres to go. Finally, it flashes ‘STOP’. John uses the toe brakes to halt the jet and reaches down to the centre console to set the parking brake. It is 12.43 local time on Tuesday. Here is Hong Kong, the day is half over. Back in Britain, the day has barely begun: the sun has yet to rise.
