Unit 2 departure
2.1. Pushback
Exercise 2.1.1 Read and translate the text using the word list.
At 17.05 UTC (universal time coordinated), the intercom crackles and the ground staff call with good news. The remaining pieces of freight have been loaded and the cargo compartment doors closed. Speedbird 25 is ready to go.
Heathrow ground control has been tuned on the No 1 VHF set and John has to wait a few minutes before he can get a word in on the busy frequency to request clearance for pushback.
Captain: Speedbird 25 pushback on Tango 7.
Heathrow Ground: 25, pushback is approved.
Using the intercom, John relays the ATC clearance to ground workers and gets their okay to pressurize the hydraulic systems. This action could cause a control surface or landing gear door to move so the pilots want to ensure that no one is in a position where they could get hurt.
Harry reaches to the overhead panel and selects numbers 1 and 4 hydraulic pumps to AUX (auxiliary) to pressurize the brake systems. Continuing with the Push/ Start checklist he checks that the auto start switch is ON and turns the beacon switch ON. The door synoptic is called up on the lower EICAS (engine indication and crew alerting system) to confirm the cabin and cargo doors are secure.
The red strobe lights now flashing on the top and bottom of the fuselage warn workers on the ramp that the jet is about to move. John has released the parking brake and moments later the powerful tug begins to move the aircraft away from the gate while a ramp worker walks alongside, keeping a vigilant lookout for any obstructions. The 747-436 towers over the pushback tug that is hooked up to it. The tug is small but mighty and it helps the jumbo jet get under way. Harry takes over the intercom, freeing John to monitor the start sequence and keep an ear on ATC.
Exercise 2.1.2 Answer the questions.
1. Who calls at 17.05 UTC?
2. What has been loaded by that time?
3. Have the cargo compartment doors been left open?
4. Has ground or tower control been tuned on the VHF radio station?
5. Why does John have to wait?
6. What does he request?
7. How does John relay the clearance to ground workers?
8. What is he allowed to do after that?
9. What does the pilot want to ensure?
10. What may cause the control surface or landing gear door to move?
11. Where is the hydraulic pump control system located?
12. Why does Harry switch the hydraulic pumps to AUXILIARY position?
13. What else does he switch on?
14. How can the pilots find out that the cabin and cargo doors are secure?
15. What do the flashing strobe lights show?
16. Is the 747 moving under its own power?
17. Why does a ramp worker walk alongside the moving aircraft?
18. What is John going to do now?
Exercise 2.1.3 Are the following statements true (√) or false (×)? Correct the false ones.
