Monologue 7. A quiet life

Felix Catt is a typical resident of Siberia Avenue, Surbiton. He looks gloomy, but in fact he is quite happy, and he leads a quiet life in this suburb of London. His wife Gertie looks after him carefully; she cleans the house regularly, and feeds him daily on well cooked meat and tinned vegetables. There is always a supply of fresh water for his whisky, and plenty of carpet space for putting practice, so he is very comfortable and content with suburban life.

Felix is very fond of his old dog, Sam. They go for walks together on Sundays. Today he is taking Sam to the local vet, because he is afraid that he is going blind. However, the vet is confident of curing him by means of a small operation. He is giving Sam an injection before operating on him, so that he will sleep peacefully the whole time and not feel any pain. There is even a pretty nurse standing by to comfort Sam in case he feels unhappy and lonely in the strange surroundings.

In general, both Felix and Sam think that they don't have a bad life, and they have no desire to change it for anything more adventurous.

Dialogue 8. Arranging to meet

Liz We need to meet some time this weekend to talk about our project.

Min OK. What are you doing today?

Liz Well, this afternoon I’ve got a dance class, but I’m not doing

anything this evening. What about you?

Min Mmm – I’m going shopping this afternoon and this evening I’m

going ice-skating. What about tomorrow?

Liz Well, I’m having my hair cut tomorrow afternoon, so that’ll take a

while.

Min What time will you be finished at the hairdresser’s?

Liz About 4 o’clock. What are doing around that time?

Min I don’t know. I might be free.

Liz OK. Why don’t we meet at the Internet Café at about 5 o’clock? We

can have a coffee and do our work.

Min Sounds good to me. Are you going out in the evening?

Liz Yes. I’m going out for dinner with a couple of friends. Do you want

to join us?

Min That would be great! I’d love to.

Liz OK. So we’ll meet tomorrow at 5 o’clock at the Internet Café.

Min Good.

Dialogue 9. Love on the internet – debbie and per

Debbie I’m really quite shy. I find it difficult to talk to people face to face. But I find it easy to chat on the Internet. I met Per there about a year ago. It was on a chatline called “the Chat Room”. He was so funny.

Per But I’m only funny on the Internet! Anyway, we chatted on the Internet for a year, we exchanged hundreds of e-mails and some photographs. I wanted to phone Debbie but …

Debbie I said no. I was worried. I didn’t want it to end.

Per She didn’t even give me her address. But finally she said OK, I could phone, so I did, and we spoke for an hour. It was very expensive! That was six months ago. Then she sent me her address and …

Debbie …that was three months ago and one week later, there was a knock at the door and I knew before I opened it. Somehow I wasn’t worried any more. I opened the door and …

Per And I stood there with some flowers …

Debbie … lots of flowers. Red roses. Beautiful and …

Per … and well, we fell in love and …

Both … and we got married last Saturday.
