Reading and speaking

Before you read:

2. Read and express your own opinion on the following quotations by Sir Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of Great Britain 1874 -1965).

- “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

- “Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”

- “We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire… Give us tools and we will finish the job.”

- “A love for tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened nations in their hour of peril; but the new view must come, the world must roll forward’.

- “The empires of the future are the empires of the mind”.

- “Never give in – never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy”.

3. Try to guess the etymology of the word “organize“:

1413, from organizare or organum “instrument, organ”. Organization (1432) is originally in the sense “act of organizing”; from organizare; meaning “condition of being organized” is first attested in 1790; that of “action of organizing parts into a whole” is 1816; that of “system, establishment” is 1873. Organization man " is one who subverts his individuality to the organization that employs him" (1956) is from the title of W.H. Whyte's book.

4. Do your best to understand the meaning of the following word combinations:

- inter-cultural approach

- conflict resolution

- peace-keeping force

- executive body

- enforcement body

- challenge response

- multinational interest

- overlapping membership

- social and economic challenges.
