Subdepartment of Russian Culture

Not more than ten years ago the study of Russian philosophy left much to be desired. The main goal of the foundation of the Chair of the History of Russian Philosophy, to which students specializing in Russian Cultural Studies are affiliated with, was to change the existing state of affairs. Therefore, in June 1990 the Department was established and since 1991 it has been headed by A. F. Zamaleyev, the scientific supervisor of the University programmes “Theoretical Structure of Philosophy and Educational World Outlook Forms” and “The St. Petersburg Trend in the History of Russian Philosophy”. In 1999 he was elected as member of the Russian Philosophical Society Presidium.

At present the Chair is one of the largest centres of studying Russian philosophy and spiritual history. It belongs to the Head Council of Philosophy under the aegis of Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.

The curriculum consists of three main courses: ‘The History of Russian Philosophy’, ‘The History of Russian Culture’ and ‘The Political Idea in Russia’ and also a number of optional courses.

- The History and the Source Studies in Russian Philosophy (A. A. Yermichev)

The history of Russian Philosophy Studies covers all the stages of the development of the Russian idea: the Middle Ages, the epoch of Europeanization, philosophical trends and currents in the 19th century, the philosophy of Russian spiritual Renaissance and the philosophy of the Soviet period. Much attention is paid to the problem of the linking of these stages, the connection of philosophy with public and political movements, as well as state institutions. The main aim of the Chair’s educational and scientific work is to form national consciousness of students on the basis of studying history of Russian culture, to strengthen their patriotism and the idea of high predestination of the Russian spirit in the process of the world history.

Students have demonstrated their deep interest in studies and since 1994 the Almanac of Russian Philosophy and Culture «Veche» has been published under the scientific supervision of Professor Zamaleyev.

Scientific activity of the Department has been marked by holding four symposia for the historians of Russian Philosophy. This work made it possible to consolidate historians of Russian philosophy from different scientific centres of the country and to create in 1995 the St. Petersburg Association of Historians of Russian Philosophy. As a result of the Association’s research work more than 25 monographs and methodological training aids have been published.

The publication of scientific articles is carried out within the limits of the publishing series: ‘Sources of Domestic Idea’, ‘Russian State Idea’, ‘The Literary Heritage of Russian Thinkers’ and others. There have been published more than 20 volumes of compositions of the Russian philosophical works.

The Chair actively cooperates with some Russian and foreign universities.
