At first, the Department provided 5-year undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral training in political science. In 1999 the Department started conducting research in international relations; therefore a new Master’s programme was launched (specialization ‘Global Politics and International Relations’).

At the Department, there is a dissertation council awarding degrees in political science for the following specializations: ‘Philosophy of Politics and Law’, ‘History and Theory of Political Science’, ‘Political Culture and Ideology’.

The general disciplines given at the Department are:

  • History of Political Thought

  • History of Political Science

  • History and Theory of Political Institutions

  • Political Theory

  • Comparative Political Studies

Optional Courses:

  • Philosophy of Politics

  • Political Socialization

The Department has hosted a number of conferences (‘The Legitimacy of Power in Russia: An Overview’, ‘Political Process in Russia’) and seminars (‘Political Culture and Political Reform in Post-Communist Society’, ‘Liberalism, Communitarism, and Democratic Reform in Post-Communist Society’). Its staff and students took part in the First Russian Philosophy Congress (1997), the First (1998) and Second (2000) Russian Congresses in Political Science.

The Department co-operates with the Universities of Tübingen (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), London (UK), Helsinki (Finland), and Barri (Italy).
