What is the title of the dictionary? Who was its editor? Where, when and by who was it published? How many entries does the dictionary contain?
Examine the table of contents. What is the title of the longest part or section of the book? Into what arts is the preceding introductory material divided? Are there any supplements or appendices after the longest part? What are they?
Read the preface, foreword, or general introduction and examine a few entries to see what kinds of information they typically contain and in what order?
To what type of dictionaries does the word-book under analysis belong?
Is there any pronunciation key in the dictionary? Where can it be found? In what way does syllabification indicated? How does the dictionary mark the position of the stresses in words?
Are spelling variants listed in the dictionary? Does the dictionary distinguish British and American variants in spelling, pronunciation and meaning?
Are word etymologies provided? Are the meanings listed in a historical order, or in the order of frequency or in some modification of one of these?
Are there different meanings of a word exemplified? Are they illustrated by phrases, quotations or sentences which are composed for that purpose? Are drawings, diagrams or maps used to clarify the definitions?
Are there sections explaining the synonyms? Are antonymous words given? Does the dictionary give illustrative phrases or sentences to clarify the likeness or difference?
What labels does the dictionary use to record variations in usage with time, place and social group? How are foreign words and phrases marked as foreign?
Are affixes entered in the main word-list? Are derivatives entered separately or are they entered under the words from which they are derived? How are compounds and phraseological units listed?
