Words that join ideas Task

1. Read the following dialogues and point out the stylistic distinctive features of these words that testify to its specific character:

Ah, now, Peter! Come over here!’

My name’s Jack, actually’.

What an awful journey you had! You must be exhausted! Anyway, you’re here now so let’s not worry any more’.

Although George was very rich, he wasn’t a happy man’

Exclamations with so and such Tasks

    1. Read and listen to the sentences:

Tom was scared. He was very scared. He was so scared.

Do you think this use of so is more written or spoken? What effect does it have?

2. Look at the sentences. When do we use so, such a(n), such, so many and so much:

We were all so worried!

Mike’s such an idiot!

It was such a good idea of Jamie’s!

He has such crazy friends!

We had such awful weather on holiday!

There are so many places I want to go to!

I’ve got so much work!

3. Complete the sentences in A with so, such a(n), such, so many or so much. Then match them with the sentences in B. Listen and check. Practice the exclamations.

Chapter 4 The Style of Official documents Distinctive stylistic linguistics features of the style of official documents

  1. Compositional features: coded graphical layout, logical arrangements, order-of-priority organization of content and information, accurate using of punctuation.

  2. Lexical features: prevalence of stylistically neutral and bookish vocabulary, terminology (legal: testimony, acquittal), proper names (names of enterprise, companies), foreign words (status quo – статус кво, force majeure – форс мажор, persona non grata – персона нон грата), abbreviations, contractions and conventional symbols (M.P. – member of Parliament, Ltd (limited), $, £, €), toponyms (Tatarstan, London, Paris), international words (innovation, capitalistic, mentality, cosmopolitan, tolerant) etc.
