Information about Verbs

The following information concerns the relations of a verb and an object (подлежащее и дополнение)

Transitive / Intransitive verbs

Transitive verbs take are followed by an object:

/за переходным глаголами следует дополнение/

Intransitive verbs are not followed by any object but by an adverbial

/за непереходными глаголами не следует дополнение, но может быть обстоятельство/.

Verbs that can be transitive or intransitive

advise (who?) a client

investigate (what?) a case

provide (what?) expertise

preside (where – in court)

speak (where? how? when?)

work

help: they always help/ he helps the clients

know: I know/ They know the laws

rule: Court ruled in favor of the claimant / The Queen rules the country

Exercise II.

Decide what verbs are used in the following sentences and mark them with t (transitive) or i (intransitive)

  1. The jurors have reached a verdict.

  2. Mr. Jones presented that case in the lawcourt.

  3. Jane appeared at the trial.

  4. Lawyers work for companies as in-house counsels.

  5. When the problem of unfair decision arises you appeal.

  6. Solicitors draft documents and brief cases.

  7. Who keeps records of court proceedings.

  8. She complained after the accident happened.

  9. Judge Stanford resolved that dispute between the neighbours.

  10. Alison can help you.

  11. We act for the company.

  12. He can defend the clients better than you.

A verb can have two objects

He wrote me (1) a letter (2). OR He wrote a letter (2) to me (1).

Judge awarded the plaintiff (1) relief (2) in the amount of $500.

OR Judge awarded $500 relief (2) to the plaintiff (1).

With some verbs the object is introduced with for and not to:

She will certify this document for you.

Solicitors prepare documents for barristers.

Exercise III.

Paperwork

Match each verb with all possible objects (nouns), then complete the sentences with the phrases. In most cases more than one option is applicable.
