The murmansk region

Almost the whole of the Murmansk region is beyond (Полярный круг) and (располагается) on (Кольский полуостров). To the south-west, the region (граничит) upon Republic of Karelia, to the west – upon Norway and Finland. The territory of region comprises 144,9 thousand sq. km and (простирается) from the west to the east for about 550 km, from the north to the south – for 400 km. The northern coast is washed by the Barents Sea.

The (столица) of the Kola North is a hero-city of Murmansk. It is the largest administrative, industrial and cultural centre above the Polar Circle. Industry is the basic economical potential of the region. Annual (объем) of export amounts about 900 million dollars in 80 countries (по всему миру). A share of export production in the total volume has positive dynamics and (насчитывает) to more than 45 % in 2010.

Energy capacities, created on the Kola Peninsula considerably (превышает) the consumption necessities of the region. It (позволяет) exporting up to 4 billion kilowatt/per hour of electricity annually. Infrastructure of regional culture is (многосторонний) and large: museums, libraries, Houses and Palaces of Culture, schools for primary aesthetic education and music schools. The climate of the Murmansk region is arctic temperate, it is influenced by (теплое течение) Gulf Stream.

The Murmansk region (была основана) on the 28th of May 1938. There are 16 towns, 5 districts, 16 urban settlements, 17 rural area administrations in the region.

Планы устройства портового города за Полярным кругом появились в 70-х годах XIX века. Первые изыскатели пришли на Мурман для разведки новых мест в 1912 году. Через три года в 1915 году, во время Первой мировой войны, на правом берегу Кольского залива Баренцева моря был основан Мурманский морской порт и при нём – портовый посёлок Семёновский, который был назван по имени бухты, где сооружались причалы, и ближайшего озера. Создание порта было связано со стремлением России получить выход в Северный Ледовитый океан через незамерзающий залив.

Официальной датой основания города считается 4 октября (21 сентября по старому стилю) 1916 года. В день присвоения статуса города на невысоком холме, где сейчас располагается Дворец культуры и техники имени Кирова, состоялась торжественная церемония закладки храма "покровителя мореплавателей". Через полгода, 3 апреля 1917 года, после Февральской революции, он принял своё нынешнее название – Мурманск.
