IV. Classroom expressions:

to greet the class; Good morning! Good afternoon! Good-bye! to have classes, after classes; Do you have classes on Saturday? to stay away from classes, to miss the lessons, to cut (to skip) lectures; to play truancy (truant); to take (mark / call out) the register; a favourable excuse, an unfavourable (poor, lame) excuse; to come in time; Sit down. Go to your place. Stand up! Take your seat. Who is on duty today? What date is it today? What’s the date today? May I come in? May I go out? What’s the pronunciation (spelling) of the word? Is this right (correct, wrong)? Go on reading (writing, retelling). Don’t go so fast! I haven’t prepared a task. I’m not prepared. I left the book at home. I forgot about the exercise. Open your books at page 89. Do exercise 15 on page 58. Shall I read (begin, answer your question)? What’s the English (Russian) for…?

Will you repeat it? Can you (could you) repeat it? Will you pronounce (translate, spell) it? Will you say it again (once more)?

Please, pronounce (translate, spell) it. That will do. Stop talking. Silence, please. Keep silent. No helping (whispering), please. The time is up. to write a test; to do homework orally (in written form, in writing); to give (to set, to check) homework (hometask); to collect (to hand in) exercise-books (homework); to give in (to give out, to hand out) papers; Come (up) to the blackboard! Come to the front! Work on yourself (on your own)! Wipe the word (sentence) off. Wipe off (out) the board, please. Clean the board, please. Dust the board, please. Rub off the board, please. Let the others see the board.

Don’t stay in front of the board. Speak up! Ask questions on (about) the text. Put questions to the sentence. May I ask you a question?

May I say it in this way? May I put it like this? to make a report; to make a mistake, to correct mistakes; How long is it before the bell?

Idioms and sayings about education

To be a bookworm (= someone who reads a lot) "He's always reading. He's a real bookworm."

To be a copycat. (= someone who does or says exactly the same as someone else) "She always copies my work, she's such a copycat."

To learn something off by heart (= to learn something in such a way that you can say it from memory) "I learnt all the vocabulary off by heart."

To learn the hard way (= to have a bad experience) "I told her not to marry him. But she had to learn the hard way."

To learn the ropes (= to learn how to do a job) "She's new here and is still learning the ropes."

To learn your lesson (= to suffer a bad experience and know not to do it again ) "I got very drunk once and was really sick. I won't do it again, I learnt my lesson."

To live and learn (= said when you hear or discover something which is surprising ) "I never knew that she was married. Oh well, you live and learn."

The school of hard knocks (= often said about people who haven't had an easy life) "He learnt the hard way at the school of hard knocks."
