3. Answer the following questions.

  1. What do we think about speaking about art?

  2. Why do we go to the museums?

  3. Do you like to listen to the music?

  4. Did you attend the music school in your childhood?

  5. What kinds of music do you know?

  6. What prominent Ukrainian composers can you name?

  7. Is Ukraine rich in talented singers?

  8. What do they sing about?

  9. What is the text about?

10. What is the main idea of the text?

11. What other singers can you add to the list used in the text?

12. Divide the text into separate parts.

13. Provide another title to the text.

4. Match the words with their definitions. Hit, the charts, album, number one

  1. a record, tape or CD that has a collection of songs on it;

  2. a song that is very popular;

  3. a list of the most popular pop songs at the moment;

  4. the song that is at the top of the charts.

5. Give your own definition of art. What is your attitude to different arts? Have you ever thought about the role they play in our lives? Here is a list of arts. Look at it and say which of them you like and understand better than others.

ART – the use of the imagination to express ideas or feelings, particularly in painting, drawing or sculpture; the skills of creating objects such as paintings, drawings or sculptures.

6. Divide different kinds of art into separate groups (there are five of them); write them in the column below. Put the words/phrases that are related to each kind of art opposite, near its headings. But first, read and translate the words and phrases.

Cinema, opera, books, talented composer, painting, play, film, novel, jazz, portrait, landscape, classical music, cookery book, the curtain rises, cinema-goer, prompter, theatre, magazine, song, black and white film, the curtain falls, colour, animated cartoon, screen, the Puppet Theatre, movie-star, music, bookworm, symphonic music, artist, article, singer, water-colours, biography, oil-colours.

7. Work in groups. Discuss these points.

    • There are few places where you can avoid hearing music;

    • Our taste in music is personal;

    • Music can affect us physically;

    • The only music which affects us positively is that which we like;

    • Music can be used to cure people in hospitals;

    • Certain types of music can be harmful.

8. Make up dialogues of your own on the following situations.

DIALOGUE #1

Make up a dialogue, based on the text, you’ve just read. Imagine that you are a great lover of music. You’ve bought two tickets for the concert of your favourite star. You do not want to go there alone, that is why you want to invite your best friend. But he/she thinks that listening to the music is just a harmful habit. Try to convince him/her that he/she is mistaken. Use specific arguments from the text.

DIALOGUE #2

You are a famous producer, who was invited to Great Britain for an interview. The subject of the programme is “Music in Ukraine”. Answer the interviewer’s questions about Ukrainian show-business, groups and music stars. Use the information from the text.
