11. Read the following dialogues and act them out:

TICKET RESERVATION

Travel agent: Can I help you?

Jason: I want to fly to London next week. I’d like to make reservations for a roundtrip ticket.

T. A.: What day are you planning to leave for London?

J.: On the 15th of March.

T. A.: There are three flights to London on that day – at 10 a.m., at 8.30 and 9 p.m. Do you have any preference about the time of the day?

J.: I’d rather leave at 9 p.m. I want to get to London early in the morning.

T. A.: I can make a reservation for a TWA flight. Are you going to travel 1st class or economy?

J.: I prefer economy. How much will it be?

T.A.: 440 dollars.

J.: Are meals and refreshments served on the flight?

Т. A.: Yes, they are.

J.: What’s the flying time?

T. A: Six hours.

J.: What’s the London airport we’ll arrive at?

T. A.: Heathrow Airport. How many days are you planning to stay in London?

J.: Seven days.

T. A: When would you like to fly home from London?

J.: March 22nd.

T. A.: All right. Your name and address?

J.: Jason Ford, 64-42 99th Street, Rego-Parte, New York 11374.

T. A.: And your telephone number?

J.: (718) 439-7286.

T.A.: Will you pay by credit card?

J.: Yes, by Master Card. Number... Valid until January 15, 1993. When can I get my tickets? -

T. A.: You’ll have them 2 days before your departure.

BOOKING A HOTEL ROOM

Receptionist: Good afternoon, Bridge Hotel. May I help you?

Jason: Yes. I’d like to book a room, please.

R.: Certainly. When for, sir?

J.: March the 15th.

R.: How long will you be staying?

J.: Seven nights.

R.: What kind of room would you like, sir?

J.: Er... single with bath. I’d appreciate it if you could give me a

room with a view over the river.

R.: Certainly, sir. I’ll just check what we have available. Yes, we

have a room on the 4th floor with a really splendid view.

J.: Fine. How much is the charge per night?

R.: Would you like breakfast?

J.: No, thanks.

R.: It’s eighty four pounds per night excluding VAT.

J.: That’s fine.

R.: Who’s the booking for, please, sir?

J.: For me, Mr. Ford, that’s F-O-R-D.

R.: Okay, let me make sure I got that: Mr. Ford, single with bath for March 15th – 22th . Is that correct?

J.: Yes, it is. Thank you.

R.: Let me give you your confirmation number. It’s: 7576385. I’ll

repeat that: 7576385. Thank you for choosing the Bridge Hotel and

have a nice day. Goodbye.

J.: Goodbye.

CHECKING IN AT KENNEDY AIRPORT

Ticket lady: Good morning, can I have your plane ticket, please?

Jason: Sure, here you are.

T.L.: Everything looks like fine. Do you want to be in smoking or non-smoking, sir?

J.: Non-smoking, please.

T.L.: Would you like a window seat or an aisle seat?

J.: A window seat, please.

T.L.: Here is your boarding pass, Mr. Ford, you have to go gate number 12, your flight will leave as scheduled.

J.: Here are my suitcases with baggage tags on them, I don’t think they’re too heavy.

T.L.: They’re fine. I’ll put them on the conveyor belt now and send them onto the plane.

J.: Where do I go now?

T.L.: You have to go to hand baggage control now, it’s 150 feet on your right and then you can board the plane.

J.: Thanks for all your help.

T.L.: You’re welcome, have a nice trip.

HAND BAGGAGE CONTROL

Baggage officer: Good morning, put your hand baggage on the conveyor belt to be X-rayed now, please.

Jason: Here you are.

B.O.: Step through the metal detector now, please.

J.: Oh, what’s that ringing noise?

B.O.: You must have some metal on you. Take off your watch and anything else that you have which is metal, please.

J.: OK, now I’ll try again.

B.O.: Good, you’re fine this time, here are your valuables, briefcase and shoulder bag.

Announcement: Could all passengers flying on the 247 flight to London Heathrow, please report to check in and begin boarding, thank you.

J.: That’s me, I’d better get going. Then I can wait in the lounge.

WHERE IS MY SEAT?

Stewardess: Welcome aboard, sir, could I see your boarding pass, please?

Jason: Of course, here it is.

S.: Follow me, Mr. Ford, you have window seat number 12 and you’re in row number 24.

J.: Thanks. Where can I put my hand baggage?

S.: Here you are, you have a baggage compartment above your seat for your hand baggage.

J.: Could you help me? I can’t open it.

S.: There you are. Can I do anything else for you, sir?

J.: Oh yes, I’d like a blanket and a pillow.

S.: Just a minute.

J.: Thanks, I feel at home now.

S.: Can you fasten your seatbelt now, Mr. Ford? We are about to take off.

J.: OK, I’m ready for take off!

TIME TO EAT

Stewardess: What would you like to drink, sir?

Jason: What have you got to offer?

S.: Well, we have cold drinks such as apple juice, orange juice and mineral water or you can have tea or coffee.

J.: I think I’ll have orange juice, please.

S.: Oh, I’m sorry, sir. Are you all right?

J.: Don’t worry about it. It’s only a bit of juice.

S.: I’m sorry about the mess, but the turbulence makes serving difficult as you can see.

J.: Yes, it must be a difficult job to serve on a plane.

Captain: This is your captain speaking. We are experiencing some turbulence, but there is no need to panic. Please, remain seated with your seats in the upright position.

S.: Mr. Ford, would like hot meal or the salad?

J.: I’ll have the salad, please.

S.: Here you are. Enjoy your meal.

J.: Thanks very much.

PASSPORT AND CUSTOMS

Jason: Here I am. Passport and customs control first.

Passport officer: Good afternoon, can I see your passport, please, sir?

Jason: Sure. Here you are.

P.O.: That seems fine, Mr. Ford. Have a pleasant stay in England.

J.: Thanks. Where is customs, please?

P.O.: Go straight ahead, it’s on your left.

J.: Thanks again.

Customs Officer: Good afternoon. Have you got anything to declare, sir?

J.: Well, I’m not sure.

C.O.: If you have more than a litre of alcohol or more than 200 cigarettes, you have to declare them.

J.: I don’t have that much.

C.O.: Thank you then, sir. Have a good holiday in England.

J.: Thanks. Have a nice day.
