III. Методические рекомендации

При самостоятельном изучении темы студентам рекомендуется выполнить следующие виды работ:

  1. чтение англоязычных текстов и текстов на родном языке по названным темам с целью уяснения различных точек зрения на конкретные вопросы и корреляции терминологии;

  2. использование электронных вариантов учебного материала, созданных на кафедре;

  3. использование Интернет;

  4. ответы на вопросы, изложенные в разделе «Методическое обеспечение».

5) подготовка докладов по темам 2, 4, 5, 10, 11.

IV. Методическое обеспечение

Using the special literature indicated below, the electronic version of the teaching material, the Internet, the manual «Анализ художественного текста» prepared in English by the teacher of the department Chaban B.Y., make reports on themes 2, 4, 5, 10, 11 and give comprehensive answers to the following questions, supplying them, where possible, with examples:

  1. The XVI century is known to be the most fruitful period in establishing the norms of the literary language in Britain. What were the main trends in the development of the English literary language at that time?

  2. What was the role of Jonathan Swift and Samuel Johnson in the history of the English literary language?

  3. Comment on the influence of purism on the English literary language in the XIX century.

  4. What are the new features of the XXth century literary language?

  5. What functional styles exist in the present-day English language?

  6. Comment on the features of the English classical syllabo-tonic verse.

  7. What are the distinctive characteristics of the language in drama?

  8. Speak on the types of meaning, the role of the connotative component in stylistic reference of a word.

  9. What is meant by the stylistic transformation of phraseological units, pro-

verbs and sayings?

  1. Comment on the stylistic use of the graphical means.

  2. What are the lexical, syntactical, graphical peculiarities of the text of English advertisements?

  1. Describe the plot structure of a piece of emotive prose.

  2. What are the common features and distinctions of the uttered and unuttered represented speech?

  3. What is implication in the belles-lettres prose text? Give examples to illustrate your point of view.

  4. What are the main features of the newspaper text?

  5. Characterize the syntactical expressive means: enumeration, tautology, emphatic constructions.

  6. Characterize the stylistic devices: epigram, allusion. Note the double meaning of the term «epigram».

The following concise survey of certain problems of stylistics meant for the self-dependent study will help the students give proper answers to the questions and prepare reports and abstracts on the themes named.

1. Relation of Stylistics to Other Linguistic Disciplines

Stylistics and style are closely connected with the communicative aspect of language, with the problem of its usage, functioning. A style of language is a system of interrelated language means which serves a definite aim in communication. The following styles are distinguished within the English literary language: a) the belles-lettres style, b) the publicistic style, c) the newspaper style, d) the scientific prose style, e) the style of official documents. Each style of language is characterized by a number of individual features.

Stylistics is the study of the nature, functions and structure of expressive means

and stylistic devices, on the one hand, and, on the other, the study of each style of language as mentioned above. A course in stylistics will benefit those who have a sound linguistic background. The expressive means of English and the stylistic devices used in the literary language can only be understood when a thorough knowledge of the phonetic, grammatical and lexical data of the given language has been attained. The expressive means and stylistic devices must be observed and interpreted on different levels: on the phonetic, morphemic, lexical, syntactical levels and on the utterance level. If a thorough command of language data has not been acquired, the subtleties of the theory of stylistics and its communicative value may escape the student or may prove to be beyond his grasp.
