Studying Economics for the first time it is necessary to know what Economics is all about. The dictionary defines economics as "the study of the production of wealth and the consumption of goods and services in a society". This means that economics is the study of mankind in the everyday business life.
Most people work to earn their living and produce goods and services. Goods are either agricultural (like maize, milk, potatoes, wheat, corn, apples, oranges, bananas, onions, carrots, etc.) or manufactured (like cars, TV sets, computers, furniture, refrigerators, radio sets, jeans, suits, skirts, shirts, shoes, note-books, lamps, pens, pencils, etc.). Services are such things as education, medicine and commerce. Some people provide goods; some provide services.
Economics is a social science, i.e. a study of society like History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology.
The science of Economics is concerned with all our material needs and wants. It is also concerned with such notions as unemployment, inflation, international trade, interaction of business and labor. Economics studies what is or tends to be. The science does not pretend to tell what ought to be. People must make up their own minds about that.
