London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe.

Its population is more than 11 million people.

London is situated on the river Thames. It was founded more than two thousand years ago.

Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other.

The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre Numerous banks, offices and firms are concentrated here, including the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange and the Old Bailey. Few people live in the City but over a million come to work here.

The Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace, where the Queen lives, and the Houses of Parliament stretching for nearly 1000 feet along the north bank of the Thames.

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It іs a symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses are situated there. English aristocracy lives in this part. One of the busiest streets in the West End is Oxford street.

The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and the Port of London there. The region is densely populated by working class families, those people who have built the palaces of the West End. Old residents of the East End are proud to be called cockneys which means true Londoners, hereditary inhabitants of the area.

There are a lot of places of interest in London. Among them there, are: Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the largest clock of

England, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, London Bridge, the Tower of London, Madame Tussaud's and others.

Piccadilly Circus, one of the busiest areas in London, was once known as the centre of the British Empire. In the middle is the famous statue of Eros.

Canary Wharf is a huge business complex on the north bank of the river Thames. It is served by its own railway.

London has many fine squares. Trafalgar Square is a historical reminder of the great naval admiral Lord Nelson. To the right of the square there is the National Gallery which has a fine collection of European paintings. St. Paul's Cathedral is the biggest English church. Another famous church is Westminster Abbey where kings, queens, and many famous people are buried.

London is also famous for its beautiful parks. Hyde Park is the most democratic park in the world, as anyone can say anything he likes there. Regent's Park is the home of London Zoo.

In London all kinds of vehicles ride up and down the streets: double-decker buses, lorries, vans, taxis, private cars. Besides, the oldest underground railway system called "tube" is still one of the largest in the world.

It is impossible to describe all places of interest. The best way to know London is to visit it.
