PUBS

Pubs are an important part of British life. Even very small villages nearly always have a pub. People often go to the pub for a drink in the evenings and at weekends, and have one pub near their home that they go to regularly, known as their local. In the past, women did not go to pubs, although they do not like to go to them alone.

According to the law, you must be 18 years old before you drink alcohol in a pub. Children are not usually allowed into pubs, although some pubs, usually ones that serves food, let parents bring their children.

Pubs always serve beer and spirits (strong alcoholic drinks such as gin, vodka and whisky). People go up to the bar to be served – the barstaff do not come to your table to ask what you want. Customers do not usually ask for “a pint of lager” or “a pint of stout”, but “a pint of Carlsberg” or “a pint of Guinness”.

Many pubs serve food, especially at lunch time. Most pubs do not serve meals late in the evening, and just sell packets of crisps and peanuts.

Pubs are usually open from 11.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. At around 10.50 p.m. the landlady or the landlord rings a bell and shouts “last orders”, then at 11.00 rings the bell again and shouts “time” (= no more drinks will be served, and that’s why people should finish their drinks and go home). According to the law, the barstaff must stop serving drinks at 11.00 p.m. The customers then have to finish their drinks in twenty minutes, known as a “drinking up time”. Drinking after this time is illegal. If the landlady or a landlord do not obey these laws, their licence could be taken away from them.

Pubs have names such as the King’s Arms, the Red Lion, The White Horse, or The Rose and Crown. There is often a sign outside the pub illustrating the name with the picture.

Pubs often have games for people to play, such as pool and darts. Some of them may organize a pub quiz. The customers form the teams and someone calls out the questions on subjects such as sports, history, popular music or films. Many pubs have satellite television. In the UK a great number of important football matches are broadcast only on satellite television, which most people do not have at home, so they have to go to the pub to watch them there.
