16) Why is pair-work important in the efl classroom?
1) How can teachers make a difficult long authentic text more approachable for students? Rather than simplifying a text by changing its language, make it more approachable by eliciting students' existing knowledge in pre-reading discussion, reviewing new vocabulary before reading, and asking students to perform tasks that are within their competence, such as skimming to get the main idea or scanning for specific information, before they begin intensive reading.
2) What are the features of authentic texts?
The reading material must be authentic: It must be the kind of material that students will need and want to be able to read when traveling, studying abroad, or using the language in other contexts outside the classroom.
3) What are the advantages of using newspapers in the EFL classroom?
Newspapers are a useful tool in the ELT classroom for improving reading skills and enhancing students' knowledge of current affairs. There is a danger of putting students off reading newspapers if articles are used in the same way as course books, with tedious comprehension activities. If used in a more inspiring way, newspapers can help students to develop not only reading skills but also writing, grammar, vocabulary and speaking skills. Below are some tips and activities which I believe can help.
Authentic
Excellent springboard for lessons
Newspapers feature different types of language (narratives, letters, ads, etc.)
Current issues are discussed
Many photos to motivate discussion
Easy to access
Material is not expensive
Types of features in newspapers
Letters to the editor
Crossword puzzles
Weather grids
Charts
Sport articles
Advice columns
Editorials
Advertisements
4) What kind of pre-reading activities can you use for the warm-up?
To tell a joke, show pictures, ask questions, discuss the title, put mixed title in the correct order,attention-grabber; (activity; game)
5) Give one example of authentic task which teachers can use with newspapers.
Write a newspaper headline and an article for an event in this book.
6) Can we use authentic texts with low level students? Why (not) and which materials?
Can not. Difficult authentic texts will not be appropriate. It is better to use graded readers.
7) Why is reading important? What does it develop? Reading texts also provide good __MODELS__ for English writing. If the reading text is especially interesting and engaging, acquisition is likely to be even more successful.
Reading texts also provide good models for English writing.
Reading texts also provide opportunities to study language: vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and the way we construct sentences, paragraphs and texts.
Good reading texts can introduce interesting topics, stimulate discussion, excite imaginative responses and be the springboard for well-rounded, fascinating lessons.
8) What does a balanced reading program look like?
The number one priority is to help children fall in love with books. Conditions are created to enable students to learn to read. Teach multiple ways to recognize words. Remember, phonics is just one of six ways to recognize words. And it is the least efficient in terms of thinking space used.
