Diseases and Health Problems

“Medicines are not meant to live on”, an English proverb says. Many people can’t keep from thinking that good health is better than the best medicine.

Often people think that good health means not being ill. Good health is more than that! Good health is the sum of total of your physical, mental and social well-being. And if your health is good, you are always in a good mood. You have “A sound mind in a sound body”. A lot of people are against taking pills. If you want to avoid it, you should go in for sports and keep yourself fit.

Sometimes you do not have good health. Disease is anything that blocks you from being at your best. Disease is the improper function of body parts or processes. When your grandparents were young they faced the threat of many diseases, caused by germs. Many people died from tuberculosis, chicken-pox and typhoid fever.

Today the health outlook has changed. You can be immunized to prevent many diseases. Through the mass media, people are beginning to realize that they are too smart to control some of their health problems. Good health habits can help prevent some diseases. Not smoking will decrease your chances of getting heart diseases or cancer.

If something is wrong with our health, we are rather run down and look miserable. In such cases we should consult a doctor and have a thorough examination. If you have a toothache you should consult a dentist. If something has got into your eye you go to see an oculist (eye-specialist). If you have a sore throat you consult a throat-specialist. If you have a heart attack you call the ambulance service. If your nerves are out of order you consult a nerve-specialist. If your little sister or brother is shivering and has a high temperature you send for a children’s doctor. He seems to know all about kids’ diseases.

If the weather is bad you should better stay at home in order not to catch a cold. But if you were not lucky and you have got influenza (flue), just stay in bed for a long period to avoid pneumonia. A sore throat, terrible headache, constant sneeze and cough are the main symptoms of pneumonia. The face of the ill person is usually very white and there are dark areas under his eyes. He lies still in bed and seems very detached from what is going on. A doctor visits such a patient at home and he usually prescribes all necessary medicines in different coloured capsules with instructions. Some prescriptions can be made up at the chemist’s. Here you can get medicines and all kinds of pills and ointments, cough mixtures and what not.

But if the illness is serious or an operation is necessary, you should deny having unreliable home treatment and get a specialist in a hospital where they have all medical equipment. Before going to the hospital you should pack all the things you will need there. When you arrive at the hospital the nurse writes down your name, age, address and relates into a ward. In the ward you undress and the nurse gives you a nightgown to wear. Now you can get into bed. There’s a buzzer on the bedside table. If you press the button, someone will come at once.

Being in hospital you are under a constant doctor’s care. There is nothing more unpleasant than being ill. The doctor will come and, while asking “What’s wrong with your health?” will feel your pulse, take your temperature, sound your lungs and examine you thoroughly. The doctors prescribe a course of treatment for your disease. You may have your blood test taken and your chest X-rayed. The nurse takes your blood pressure and gives you injections regularly. If your illness is serious you will have to be operated on. If you follow the doctor’s advice (instructions) you may hope for a speed recovery. And when you leave the hospital, you will be a happy healthy man.
