Batiste
Batiste was named after the Frenchman Babtiste of Cambrei in the 13th century. Originally made in linen it is now more commonly woven with mercerized cotton yarns. This is a lightweight cloth in weave with a lustrous finish. It is a very fine quality cloth made of long, staple combed cottons.
Traditionally produced in its undyed natural state it is now bleached white or dyed and is ideal for handkerchiefs, dresses and shirts. A heavy quality batiste is also made for foundation garments. Tamise cloth is another name for batiste.

Exercise 16. Read and translate a dialogue into Ukrainian:
A. – Look here, what an interesting text we have read about batiste.
B. – You are right. I liked most that such cloth was named after the Franchman Babtiste who lived in as early as 13th century.
A. – Oh, such things took place sometimes. For example the cloth makintosh was named after an English chemist Makintosh who made rainproof cloth for raincoats, umbrellas etc.
B. –As for me I’d like to have a dress or a blouse made of batiste. We’ve read that it is lustrous, light and has a cooling effect.
