The future continuous (progressive) tense

SHALL (WILL) BE + V + ING

Exercise 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Future Continuous Tense.

1. When you arrive I probably (pick) fruit. 2. When we reach England it (rain) probably. 3. I’ll call for her at eight. - No, don’t. She still (have) break- fast then. 4. I (wait) for you when you come out. 5. When you next see me I (wear) my new dress. 6. I’ll give Jack your message. I can do it easily because I (see) him tomorrow. We go to work on the same train. 7. I (see) you again. I’ll come at three o’clock. - Good. I (expect) you. 8. What do you think the children (do) when we get home? - I expect they (have) their supper. 9. We’ve just got to the top in time.The sun (rise) in a minute. 10. That football club has lost some of its players. They (look) out for new men.

Exercise 2. Ask a person about his plans using the Future Continuous.

Model: - Are you going to use your car today?

- Will you be using your car today?

1. Are you going to see Ann next Monday? 2. Are you going to use your computer tomorrow evening? 3. Are you going shopping this afternoon? 4. Are you going to the post-office? 5. Exercise 3. Answer the following questions to let your partner know what other people will be doing. Use the prompts given in brackets.

Model: - Are you going to watch the match tomorrow.(work)

- No, I’m not going to watch it because I’ll be working.

Exercise 4. Say what you or other people will be doing at a definite moment in the future.

Model: I’m going to watch TV from 9 till 10 o’clock in the evening.

Exercise 5. Translate into English using the Future Continuous.

THE FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

SHALL (WILL) HAVE + V (Participle II)

Exercise 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Future Perfect Tense.

1. By the end of the week he (translate) the first part of the book. 2. I am sure that by that time we (finish) packing. 3. If you don’t hurry, the train (go) by the time you reach the station. 4. I (finish) this work when you return. 5. She (pass) her exams by 6 o’clock. 5. The secretary (look) through all the papers by the time the director comes. 6. By the end of the month 5,000 people (see) this exhibition. 7. You (translate) the article before the bell rings? 8. I save 50 pounds a month and I started in January. Exercise 2. Answer the following questions about the actions which will have happened by a certain moment in the future.

- Not yet, but he’ll have taught me to play golf by next month.

Exercise 3. Give a negative answer to the following questions using the Future Perfect Tense.

Model: - Can you tell me what you want to do by Monday? (decide)

- No, I shall not have decided by then.

Exercise 4. Translate into English using the Future Perfect Tense.

Exercise 5. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form: Future Continuous or Future Perfect.

1. Don’t phone me between 7 and 8. We (have) dinner then. 2. Phone me after 8 o’clock. We (finish) dinner by then. 3. Tomorrow afternoon we’re going to play tennis from 3 o’clock until 4.30. So at 4 o’clock we (play) tennis. 4. Can we meet tomorrow afternoon? - Not in the afternoon. I (work). 5. Will you be free at 11.30? - Yes, the meeting (finish) by that time. 6. Jack usually gives me a lift home, but we both (come) home by train tomorrow as his car has broken down. 7. Tom is on holiday and he is spending his money very quickly. If he continues like this, he (spend) all his money by the end of his holiday. 8. Do you think you still (do) the same job in ten years’ time? 9. Jane is travel- ling around Europe at the moment. So far she has travelled about 1,000 miles. By the end of the trip, she (travel) more than 3,000 miles.
